When you're talking tech, it never hurts to have a convertible BMW on stage with you. The afternoon keynote speeches at the Intel Developer Forum covered a lot of ground and some eye candy to keep us focused on what a couple of hours of geek speak can morph into, in the form of products. The BMW demo, for example, showcased how an open entertainment platform - utilizing WiMax technology - can take in-car information (think mapping, points of interest and so on) and in-car entertainment (streaming video and music via head-rest screens) beyond the basic GPS, satellite radio and IPod Connectivity that's being offered today. The in-screen images of the future GPS systems are three-dimensional and Web Connectivity takes... ...

Apple patents don't always bear fruit, but this one seems like it'll happen, and soon, actually. It's for accessing your entire iTunes library from anywhere—streamed to your iPhone or touch either via Wi-Fi or over the air. Basically, this future iTunes will sync the metadata for your whole library, and all the music and videos stored back on your computer ("virtual media items") will be totally integrated with the content actually on your device, so it'd be just like having your entire library on your phone. Not only does this imply the long-desired ability to wirelessly sync (and over great distances), wireless IPod-to-IPod Connectivity and data sharing is part of the patent too—yes, just like Zune squirting. Welcome to the social, or something. Again, while Apple patent dreams don't always come true, this one has a definite sense of realness to it—it'd make for a nice announcement at next month's expected IPod/MacBook event, in any case. It was way back in February when we first alerted you to DLO's upcoming Homedock, but now there's more info available. The Homedock HD Pro is an upscaler dock that can add 1080i or 720p output to your IPod through an HDMI cable to your TV, and it's going to be demoed at the upcoming CEDIA Expo show. It's got "industry standard Connectivity" over RS-232 and I.P., with digital optical audio and an IR receiver so you can bolt it into your media setup and control it with universal IR remotes. Better still the dock has an "enhanced on-TV interface" which "features album art in an icon-based format," which makes it sound like a mini AppleTV. There's no pricing info as yet. [ CEPro ] ...

CEA , the Consumer Electronics Association , is putting together a group to consider establishing industry standards for portable devices ranging from MP3 players to GPS units. The group will be leading a discussion at the CEA Industry Forum in October. The primary purpose of such standards would be to ensure products from cars to home stereos could be have support for a variety of devices without the manufacturer needing to work individually with vendors of different gadgets. Brian Markwalter, CEA vice president, Technology and Standards said "In many cases consumers would like to attach these devices to other CE products to enhance their experiences. CEA wants to explore whether industry technical standards might enable more robust Connectivity between portable devices and other products, and whether such Connectivity might help to grow consumers' interest in such products." One potential problem for such a plan would be the dominance of the Portable Media Player (PMP) market by Apple 's IPod . Apple has traditionally resisted the idea of using any standards besides their own, which enables them more control over third party support for their hardware. As the industry leader they're not likely to see open standards as an advantage. Of course it's also possible this would either help their competition, as Apple loses sales to devices that work and play better with other products. Perhaps the biggest question at this point is why ...

Filed under: IPod Family , Retail , iTunes , iPhone According to a few tipsters , the iTunes activation servers that help do everything from activate brand new iPhones to getting new firmware for IPod touches are dead to the world. Tipster dik said "[A]s of right now, [Apple Retail] has lost all Connectivity with the iTunes activation servers. No idea how long this will last, but everyone who is in line right now can expect a MUCH longer wait." This also affects people trying to update to the 2.0 firmware from home, via iTunes for the iPhone and IPod touch. There's a good chance that's where the "We could not complete your iTunes Store request" errors are coming from. Unfortunately, this means that many users have their iPhones bricked temporarily disabled, and only able to make emergency calls. Apple is aware of the problem and is working to correct it, according to a discussion thread in progress. If you have any information about what's happening, feel free to tip us . Thanks! Sony wants to bring music to every room in your home this September with the Sony S-Airplay device, also known by its model number the AIR-SA20PK. The S-Airplay is a wireless multi-room system that targets IPod owners, relying on Sony's very own S-Air technology that allows audio to travel from one room to another sans wires. The main docking station has a working range of up to 50 meters, which ought to be more than enough for most cribs these days (unless you're a rock star who stays in a huge mansion). Other features on the S-Airplay includes an alarm clock function, an AM/FM tuner and Connectivity with home theater systems. The Sony S-Airplay Wireless System ought to retail for $400 while S-Air wireless speakers will cost $130 a pop as they're released next month. We know that Dell is taking another crack at the MP3 player market, but who would've suspected that they will release not one, but two devices in due time. The second device will fall under the $100 price point and features Wi-Fi Connectivity, although it remains to be seen how this function will be utilized to the maximum. Both players will arrive sometime early next year and not September this year as certain quarters thought. It will be interesting to see the type of software platform these Dell MP3 players rely on. I'm hoping it will make a positive contribution to the overcrowded MP3/PMP market, and surely it won't be an IPod killer, right? Source article | Add a comment ...
