NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- AT&T Inc. on Tuesday outlined its pricing for the 3G version of Apple Inc.'s IPhone. As Apple previously announced, the 8GB model will cost $199 and the 16GB model will cost $299; AT&T said those prices, which require two-year contracts, are available to customers who bought the IPhone before July 11, who are activating a new line with AT&T and/or who are eligible for an upgrade discount. For current AT&T customers who aren't eligible for an upgrade discount and who agree to a new two-year service plan, the IPhone 3G will cost $399 for the 8GB model and $499 for the 16GB model. AT&T said it also plans to offer a no-contract-required option, priced at $599 for the 8GB model and $699 for the 16GB model. The 3G IPhone will go on sale at AT&T retail stores at 8 a.m. local time on July 11. ... Source: news.com.au --- 24 days ago

As was widely expected, it turns out that all the hype and fuss about the IPhone costing $199 was really hiding the key facts: it's only that Price if you're buying it in the US, along with a long term contract with high service fees. At first it actually appeared as though the only possible way you could buy the phone was with one of those contracts. However, AT&T has now admitted that it will indeed sell the phone without a contract , but the Price will be $599. While some unlockers may find that worthwhile, it's probably a bit much for most. Still, this once again highlights how Apple's predictions that it was going to change the economics of the mobile phone industry haven't actually been true. There are plenty of mobile phones out there that you can buy subsidized under a contract, which cost 3x as much without a contract. So, rather than changing the economics of mobile phones, Apple has now completely bought into them. Permalink | Comments | Email This Story ... Source: www.cnet.com.au --- 16 days ago

Before the IPhone 3G came out last month, I wrote about how valuable the old IPhone still was . A quick search reveals that used & unlocked 8Gb iPhones are going for ~$400 and 16Gb for upwards of $500, with never-opened phones going for even more. I just checked eBay again and those prices are down only slightly. Never-opened unlocked iPhones are still fetching $400-500 and somewhat less for previously used phones. If you've purchased an IPhone 3G in the past few days, you still have an excellent shot at getting most of your money back from your first phone (provided you can get it unlocked, which isn't difficult ). I also checked the prices for unlocked IPhone 3Gs...prices are upwards of $1400 for the 16GB model. The unlocked claim is somewhat dubious. AFAIK, there hasn't been a crack released yet although it's been reported that the 3Gs are being sold unlocked in Italy and Hong Kong. Update: The 3G has been cracked . ...
