Rebecca Engmann Darst co-authored this article. Wachovia (WB) – Meanwhile, the “Grand Guignol” to which we alluded earlier continues apace in the financial space today. Implied volatility in Wachovia options rose 21% earlier today after Oppenheimer analyst Meredith Whitney cut her rating on the stock, calling the outlook for the bank “bleak,” and telling Bloomberg News in no uncertain terms: “(Financial) stocks won’t be taken seriously by investors until they revalue dramatically – and Wachovia is the outlier.” Though implied volatility has since come off its blistering highs amid a 2.5% recovery for shares to $10.10, earlier today option traders wasted no time in selling July 10-strike calls for 20-cent premiums, while buying heavily into July 7.50 puts (which expire on Friday) for 25 cents. The premium on this position denotes a 10% likelihood of Wachovia shares breaching the $7.50 by that time. Interest in low-strike puts extended into the August contract at the 7.50 strike. Filed under: Competitive strategy , Intel (INTC) , Advanced Micro Dev (AMD) It is not very many chips, but it means a great deal, especially from a PR standpoint. Intel (NASDAQ: INTC ) has taken the processor franchise at Dreamworks from smaller rival AMD (NYSE: AMD ). Dreamworks indicated that the Intel products worked much better, a public slap at the incumbent. According to The Wall Street Journal, " DreamWorks Animation said the resulting increase in computing power would substantially shorten the time needed for many computing chores and aid the studio's planned shift next year to 3-D animation." Given how good the press is for Intel, it should be giving the chips to Dreamworks for free. Perhaps that is how it got the contract. Intel's new eight-core chips are extremely powerful and this should be of real benefit to Dreamworks. The news is another demonstration of how bad things are at AMD. The company still has over $5 billion in debt and barely breaks even on an operating basis. Its shares are just above $5. In 2006, they were above $40. AMD can ill afford having its name on the front page matched with another customer loss. Douglas A. Wal-Mart reported this morning, beating estimates and boosting guidance as well as Street sentiment. Still, coming ahead is inflation data at 8:30 a.m. Economists expect CPI to rise 0.4% in July, and could very well impact markets. Meanwhile, oil prices rose and the EU reported that euro-zone economy contracted 0.2% in the second quarter. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT ), the world's largest retailer, reported a second-quarter earnings growth of 17% to of $3.4 billion, or 87 cents a share, beating analyst estimates of profit of 84 cents a share. Revenue rose 10% to $101.6 billion, slightly below estimates. The company also boosted its full-year earnings forecast. The company benefited from the challenging economic conditions as shoppers looked for lower prices. Its cost cutting measures also helped. WMT shares are gaining nearly 1.5% in premarket trading. As Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL ) shares rose in recent years, many have tracked its progress as it surpassed one major company after another in market capitalization. Well, All Things Digital noticed that Apple can put another check ...

Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) may have had a roaring quarter. Wall St. did not give it back much. The stock barely moved after hours. That is extraordinary given that Intel profits were up 25% from the same quarter a year ago and its forecasts were robust. Shareholders in a bear market cannot help themselves. Good news gets lost in the fog of a falling market. Intel did give the market a special gift. It told investors that a very large portion of the tech industry will be OK this quarter. Since it has over 80% of the server and PC chip markets... ...
