Now that the Lemont boys golf team has put itself in position for another IHSA state berth, the squad can start to talk about the state experience. Not that the INDIANS haven’t been focusing on state throughout the season, but in order to do it they’ve had to take it one step at a time. The first step came Tuesday as the INDIANS won their own Class 2A regional on a windy and rainy day at Arrowhead Golf Club in Lockport. “We’ve had four goals this season,” Lemont coach Mark Hollatz said. “We wanted to win conference, win regionals, win sectionals or at least qualify for state, and do as well as we can at state. Now we’ve accomplished half of those. “We do take it one step at a time, but we also do talk about state during the year.” The INDIANS figured to be one of four teams vying for three sectional spots. They won with a 319, five stokes better than Yorkville. Joliet Catholic earned the third spot on a fifth-score tiebreaker over Oak Forest. “We won it, but it also showed the kids the importance of a fifth score,” Hollatz said. “It was a nice little lesson, even though we weren’t directly involved.” Part of the reason the INDIANS weren’t involved was because of the play from sophomore Rob Smierciak and junior Kevin McMahon. Smierciak was the medalist with a 74 and McMahon was second with a 77. Hollatz said Smierciak was 4-over par through three holes, but played 1-under the rest of the way. He has the lowest score of the nine q ... Source: www.panews.com --- 11 hours ago

It has been a tough season for a young and inexperienced Fort Osage volleyball team. And tough is how the young and inexperienced INDIANS played host Truman Tuesday night before falling 25-14, 25-22. Junior Taryn Nash, who was one of the many Truman standouts, was impressed with the Fort Osage effort. “I know Fort Osage coach Sean Barrett, and he puts a good team on floor,” Nash said. “They fought to the end.” Nash compiled 25 assists, nine digs, two kills and two service aces as Truman improved to 13-8-2 and dropped the INDIANS to a 3-14-1 with the non-conference win. “We played with a lot of intensity,” Nash added. “We got some good statistics. It was fun.” As usual, 6-foot junior Kassidy Ritchel led Truman in kills with 10. Lauribeth Agee and Lindsey Steele each had six and Eleanor Palaita added five. Truman’s offensive firepower along with six aces were too much for the INDIANS, who have only one senior. Still, the INDIANS battled hard, especially in the tight second game. Truman led 17-11 before the INDIANS rallied to within 23-22 on two Courtney Gapelu aces. But two quick points, including Ritchel’s 10th kill, ended the match. Fort Osage broke to a 10-6 lead in game one. Then Truman’s attackers and servers went to work to outscore the INDIANS 19-4 for the victory. “Fort Osage did a nice job,” Truman coach Denise Craig said. “They adjusted to us for being so young. High-fives to Fort Osage. We served and passed aggressively. ... Find more results for INDIANS on RSSMicro.com |
