: Photo: Apple Apple released its first iMac on Aug. 15, 1998. The cute, translucent blue, all-in-one PC was easily the most influential personal computer of the 1990s, heralding a return to simplicity and ease of use and briefly sparking an industrial design fad around clear, colored plastic. It also marked the return of Steve Jobs as the visionary, design-obsessed leader that Apple desperately needed. Its strong sales reversed Apple's dire mid-1990s financial situation and enabled the company to get back on the road to relevance. Over the years, the iMac's trendsetting arc has continued, with a total of four distinct models (and a close family member), some of which shipped in a handful of flavors. Here's a look at the evolution of the iMac: past, present and future. Left: The iMac wasn't Apple's first PC to feature a display and motherboard integrated into the same case; the original 1984 Macintosh (top center) shared a similar form factor. Apple resurrected its quiet, appliance-like qualities 14 years later. The Power Mac G3 all-in-one (lower left) was the closest Apple ever came to a beige iMac. Released in early 1998, its specs were similar to the iMac's, but were available only to educational institutions. The haughty design of the 20th Anniversary Macintosh (1997, lower right), foreshadowed later LCD-display IMacs. With a $7,499 price tag ($10,277 in today's money) and limited-edition status, it stood conceptually opposite ...

On Friday I posted a piece about a problem with vertical lines appearing on PowerBook G4 17-inch screens just as they got outside of their three-year AppleCare warranty. Anecdotal evidence suggests that there may be a similar problem with some third generation 17-inch Intel IMacs with serial numbers in the W860****U2N range as reported by MacNN [...] ...

You know the ones I’m talking about. The candy-colored ones that live forever, even as you’re hoping they’ll die so you can replace them with something that will run OS X? A few can be upgraded, but OS X is really made for something a bit, well, snappier. Instead of wishing for [...] ...

Hi I am thinking of getting an iMac 24" 3.06 GHz with an nVidia 8800GS. I think I will get this at the end of September. I don't want to buy it if it at the end of the cycle, so does anyone know when the next iMac upgrade will be, and how major it is? Dave ...

We take great care to ensure that our systems run with reasonable temperatures as that helps extend their lifetimes. We've used various applications to control the fan speeds on different systems but, with the upgrade to 10.5, our Intel-based iMac was left without a fan-control solution that worked adequately. To that end, I decided to modify the open source (GPL) FanControl to work with our iMac. The result is that I've generated two new versions of Fan Control, one for the Intel-based IMacs and one for the MacBook/MacBook Pro . These versions also have some extended control capabilities over the original FanControl . The iMac version uses separate sensors to drive the contro... ...

Today, Apple released the new line of IMacs.  Predictions were correct on the pricepoint (it's the same) and the moderate speed, RAM, and storage bumps.  But the real question has been if these new IMacs are even worth it compared to their still new, just not next gen, cousins.   As of right now, the older models of the iMac aren't on sale at all.  You can find refurbished ones at pretty sizable discounts (up to 31% off) but no new, never used previous generation IMacs, which kind of makes this whole debate pointless.  After all, how can you decide if paying the extra money is worth it if you don't know how much the soon-to-be-discounted ones are going to cost? Even without the hard figures, this news coincides with an NPR story I heard on the way to work this morning.  Is having debt necessarily a bad thing?  One analyst by the name of Tim Hartford said no.  Citing an example from his college days, he told a story that sounded like this: Mr. Hartford was an economics major still pursuing his degree.  Unlike many, many college students, he decided to spend all of his extra time working and saving whatever money he could.  He didn't go out to the bar or have much social interaction outside of classwork for his entire college career.  He was focused on making money to save.  The fruit of his tireless efforts?  Maybe a couple of hundred dollars in the bank when he left college.  He said that if he could take it back, he would.  He wished ...
