The IMF seems to think that the global economy is going to go badly this year and worse next. According to Reuters, "With sky-high food and oil prices adding to the economic pain caused by financial strains, Strauss-Kahn said the IMF was fairly pessimistic about global growth prospects this year and, especially, in 2009." Concerns are that inflation is the real villain. The Head of the agency said, "In developed countries, central banks have taken it into account and have the correct monetary policy stance. In emerging countries and some low-income countries, in some of them at least, inflation is... ...

The Head of the International Monetary Fund doesn't think its speculators that are responsbile for sky-high energy prices, and he thinks what supply-and-demand has wrought on the upside, it will cure later on. Dominque Strauss-Kahn, the IMF's managing director, said in Osaka that increased production will help bring prices down on the supply side, while demand should ease with an increasingly sluggish global economy ought to ease pricing. Strauss-Kahn was in Japan for the Group of Eight financials officials meeting. July light sweet crude oil was down $2.42, to $134.32, in morning trading in New York. At the end of last year, it was below $100. Oil prices have been spiking as the commodities market at large have witnessed major boom in prices. The role of speculators in this bubble has been brought into question while companies and consumers feel the painful squeeze of pricey crude. Concurrently, Saudi oil adviser Ibrahim al-Muhanna said Friday the kingdom is considering increasing oil output by up to 10.0% in a bid to "regain control of the oil market," according to TradeTheNews.com. This is a break from a historically fixed hardline output position by the oil-exporting OPEC cartel, which accounts for some 40.0% of the market. (See "Oil's Indecision") While the Saudis weigh loosening their spigots, others were expanding spending on oil exploration and production and actually finding new resources. Norway announced Friday that it will ...

The Head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned Friday that soaring world food prices can have dire consequences, such as toppling governments and even triggering wars. Dominique Strauss-Kahn told France's Europe-1 radio that the price rises that set off rioting in Haiti, Egypt and elsewhere were an "extremely serious" problem. "The planet must tackle it," he said. The IMF chief said the problem could also threaten democracies, even in countries where governments have done all they could to help the local population. Asked whether the crisis could lead to wars, Strauss-Kahn responded that it was possible. "When the tension goes above and beyond putting democracy into question, there are risks of war," he said. "History is full of wars that started because of this kind of problem." Strauss-Kahn was appointed last year to Head the IMF. He was a finance minister in the late 1990s in France. ...

Germany's president and former IMF Head Hoerst Koehler has added his voice to the rising condemnation of the financial sector's role in the global economic downturn. Referring to finance markets as a "monster that has to be put back in the closet," Koehler went on to criticize the "irresponsibility" of bankers who, despite the horrific effects of that irresponsibility, receive "bizarrely high salaries." Originally interviewed by the tabloid Stern newspaper, the German business paper Handelsblatt also noted that Koehler must declare his candidacy soon for a second term. Germany has seen a wave of strikes in this calendar year, and labor militancy in Germany may well have contributed to the recent intransigence of the European Central Bank where interest rate cuts are concerned (in other words, the ECB, fearing that German workers in particular are beginning to demand wages that offset inflation, is more reluctant to lower interest rates in the face of economic downturn, unlike the Fed, which doesn't seem to fear US workers' wage demands as much). Too bad Koehler wasn't running for a spot on the European Central Bank's monetary committee.... ...
