Hyundai Motor Company confirmed plans to start retail Sales of its first LPG-electric Hybrid vehicle (earlier post) in July 2009. To be sold initially in the Korean domestic market under the Avante badge, the Elantra LPI Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) is the first production Hybrid vehicle to be powered by liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and to use Lithium Polymer batteries (supplied by LG Chem). Powered by a Liquefied Petroleum Injected (LPI) Gamma engine displacing 1.6 liters, a 15 kW electric motor and a continuously variable transmission, the Elantra LPI HEV is a mild-type Hybrid that will deliver what Hyundai calls a “competitive fuel economy rating.” The LPI engine uses direct injection. An electronic control unit (ECU) receives signals from various sensors, determines the engine state, and controls the fuel pump, injector, and ignition coil to ensure an optimal air-fuel ratio, improved engine performance and lower emissions. The Elantra LPI HEV emits 103 g/km of CO2 and 90% fewer emissions than an equivalent standard gasoline-powered Elantra to qualify as a Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV). The Elantra LPI HEV promises to be as much as 40% cheaper to operate than other competitor models in the marketplace and 50%less than a conventional Elantra model powered by a gasoline-only engine. With U.S. gas prices screaming past $4 a gallon, you would think that everyone would be rushing out to buy a fuel-efficient Hybrid. Yet Green Car Congress reports that U.S. Hybrid Sales, which were booming earlier this year, are falling back down to earth : Reported US Sales of hybrids took a 27% dive in June 2008 to 24,917 units from 34,300 units in June 2007 as Toyota continued to struggle with limited availability of the Prius. The Prius sold 11,765 units in June 2008, down 34% from June 2007. June 2008 had 24 selling days, compared to 27 in June 2007. Total light-duty vehicle Sales in the US dropped 18.3% by volume in June to 1,189,108 units, according to Autodata, with Sales of passenger cars dropping 7.9% and Sales of light trucks dropping 28.4%. Reported Hybrid Sales represent 2.1% of new vehicle Sales for the month. What gives? The drop isn't due to a lack of demand. Toyota can't make Priuses fast enough : Waiting lists to buy the world's dominant Hybrid vehicle stretch to as long as six months, and the company has only a one-day supply of them on hand (60 days is the industry norm). The major kink in Toyota's supply chain? The batteries , all of which are produced in just one factory in Japan. The factory can only churn out 500,000 batteries per year, though the car company is planning to ramp up production and open a second facility. Toyota had better get its act together soon. In the midst of a $4/gallon-inspired run on every ride that gets more than 12 MPG , we were more than a little surprised to hear that the 2008 Saturn Aura Green Line has racked up a measly 69 Sales through the end of April. Wot's the deal? Turns out that leaky batteries, courtesy of supplier Cobasys, have sent the Saturn hybrids into the realm of vaporware at the same time GM's marketers are touting the company's green credentials to any buyer who will listen. The same issue has plagued the Saturn Vue Green Line, which saw Sales numbers fall to 326 through April, vs. 2,683 in the first four months of 2007. Cobasys claims to have solved the problem and is now shipping defect-free battery packs. Knowing GM's luck with timing the market, a betting man might expect fuel prices to drop back below a buck a gallon at about the same time as production ramps back up. [Autoblog] ...
