In a case of "better never than late," Forbes reports that BMW is not going to build the X7 full-size SUV due to fears that it will sell as poorly as its would-be competitor, the Mercedes-Benz GL. Despite recent rumors from an "inside source" who told WorldCarFans the X7 was just "sleeping," Autopia has now confirmed that the same inside source told his kids a similar excuse after he backed over the family golden retriever. Both the X7 and Fido can be found on a farm in Maine, playfully rollicking through the fields. On a related note, Edmunds posted video of a BMW X6 Hybrid that might be hitting dealerships as soon as 2009. Sadly, the car is suffering from a gargantuan tumor, perhaps caused by the test engineer's cell phone or electromagnetic fields emitted from the massive amount of wiring under the hood. We wish the X6 a speedy recovery. Edmunds claims the gasoline-electric Hybrid is "designed to take the edge off fuel costs without giving up much in the way of SUV practicality or performance," which must signify an extremely advanced Hybrid system since the X6 offers neither SUV practicality nor performance. Future X6 Hybrid and X7 sales notwithstanding, BMW is having a hard time in the US market due to (surprise, surprise) the economic downturn. The falling dollar and rising euro, cash- and credit-strapped consumers "trading down" from luxury cars and a trend towards more fuel-efficient vehicles hits especially hard for the lu ...

Filed under: Hybrid , Lexus , UK How can you win a free Lexus Hybrid? Easy. Well, it's easy to enter the contest, anyway. If you're in the UK, just visit a Lexus dealer next weekend (September 6 and 7) and ask for a test drive. Lexus' dealers will be glad to show you the GS 450h , the LS 600h and, of course, the RX 400h. After the ride you can put your name into the running for a prize drawing for a gratis "365-day test drive" in a Lexus RX 400h (terms and conditions apply). What does that mean in simple English? You can win a RX 400h free for one year. I doubt you'll be to put some police decals on it, but that would add some fun. [Source: Lexus UK ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments ...

Detroit News scribe Scott Burgess is the kind of 50-something white car guy for which the gas-guzzling Dodge Challenger SRT-8 was born. As such, as a writer for Motown's hometown paper, Burgess can't just come out and call the new $46k Chrysler Aspen HEMI Hybrid a deeply-misguided, over-priced, poorly-built piece of shit. Even though, [...] ...

Yesterday, we used COTD to discuss a burn . Today we're going to focus on being "on fire" in a good way. Anyone who grew up playing NBA Jam knows that you're on fire when you manage to complete a number of great plays back-to-back. In that sense, smalleyxb122 pulled off two snarky slam dunks in industry posts today. There was this classic response to the Honda Insight Hybrid : "The new Honda Hindsight - When our Insight led us down the wrong path of Hybrid vehicles, we looked back to what Toyota had done, and copied it verbatim." -rejected first draft of Honda's press release. And in the post about a GM spokesman unaware that the Volt pre-production model was in California we've got this zinger: In fairness, GM spokeperson Rob Peterson just found out that GM was developing a plug in Hybrid three days ago, when he saw the commercial on television. Wait until next week, when he finds out that SUV sales are down. Boomshakalaka! ...

Ford is reporting August US sales of its Ford, Lincoln and Mercury brands are down 26% over the same period a year earlier, mainly due to continuing weakness in truck and SUV sales. While trucks are off 39%, the really breathtaking number is the 53% decline in SUV sales — despite the fact that Ford is touting a 17% rise in Escape deliveries. Focus sales were also up 23%, and the folks in Dearborn say that part of the sales decline is due to a 31% decrease in deliveries to fleet customers; generally not considered such a bad thing except when, you know, nothing else is selling either. Full press release after the jump. DEARBORN, Mich., September 3, 2008 – Higher demand for the fuel-efficient Ford Focus and Ford Escape continued in August, as consumers continued moving to smaller and more fuel-efficient vehicles. Ford Focus sales were up 23 percent and Escape sales were up 17 percent versus a year ago, while the impact of a weak economy and lower demand for large trucks and SUVs resulted in double-digit sales declines for Ford and the auto industry. "The Focus and Escape offer the features and fuel economy today's consumer's want," said Jim Farley, Ford group vice president, Marketing and Communications. The 2009 Escape, with its new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and six-speed transmission, delivers class-leading highway fuel economy of 28 mpg – matching the 2009 Toyota RAV4 and topping the Honda CR-V. The 2009 Escape Hybrid delive ...

Toyota is reporting total US sales were down 9.4% for August 2008 as compared to the same period a year earlier. Trucks led the decline with a drop of 17.6%, though Toyota cars also declined 3.4%. Bright spots for Toyota included the Yaris subcompact, which was up 20.5%, and, inexplicably, the huge Sequoia SUV, which was up 86.1% from August 2007. And, for those of you counting, total Toyota Hybrid sales for August 2008 (including Lexus hybrids) came in at 19,529 units, more than 13,000 of which were from Prius. Full release after the jump. September 3, 2008 - Torrance, CA - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported August sales of 211,533 vehicles, a decrease of 9.4 percent from last August, on a daily selling rate basis. The Toyota Division posted August sales of 182,252 units, a decrease of 9.4 percent from last August. The Lexus Division reported August sales of 29,281 units, a decrease of 9.1 percent from the year-ago month. Toyota Division Toyota Division passenger cars recorded August sales of 111,778 units, down 3.4 percent from the same period last year. Passenger car sales were led by Camry and Camry Hybrid, which posted combined sales of 44,064 units, up 3.3 percent over August 2007. Camry Hybrid reported August sales of 3,456 units. Corolla recorded sales of 29,443 units for the month. With limited availability, the Prius mid-size gas-electric Hybrid posted August sales of 13,463 units. Yaris reported sale ...

Filed under: Products and services , General Motors (GM) , Marketing and advertising General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM ) will offer customers wanting to buy its cars the same discounts as employees for another four weeks, according to Bloomberg News . The incentives, on most 2008 and some 2009 models, were to have expired today but, according to Bloomberg, "GM will continue the deals through the end of the month because the initial two-week offer boosted sales." Of course, this is great news for consumers, particularly the few who are confident enough in their economic circumstances to be in the market for a new car. Maybe it will encourage people leaning toward a Honda (NYSE: HMC ) or some other foreign automaker to give GM a second look or even a third one. Chances are, though, it won't do much to help. As my colleague Michael Rainey noted earlier, imports accounted for 68% of all passenger car sales in the U.S., a new low for the Big Three. These are the vehicles that consumers stung by high gas prices are most interested in purchasing. Good luck in trading in your gas-guzzling SUV for a fuel-efficient Hybrid. Many dealers are reportedly no longer interested in the big vehicles because their trade-in value has plummeted.
