In our coverage on the Apple press event earlier this week, where Steve Jobs introduced a revamp of all the company's notebooks (as well as a new Cinema Display), an error leaked into our story. We said that the new dual-GPU MacBook Pros used Hybrid SLI so you could use both graphics chips at the same time for better performance, but as it turns out, this isn't the case. Still, there's no denying the similarities between this image and all those other case leaks we've seen, and the list of specs we've been given matches up as well -- that "metal and glass" enclosure now houses an NVIDIA GPU, but no FireWire 400, and video-out is apparently through a connector "more compact" than MicroDVI. We'll find out soon enough -- oh, and just to amp up expectations, Boy Genius says he's confirmed the existence of an $899 part number in Apple's retail systems. Counting down... Update: Our source just hit us with another pic, this time from the side -- it's after the break. We're also told that there's not one, but two NVIDIA GPUs inside -- we're guessing an integrated / discrete setup like in the VAIO Z , but we'll find out for sure tomorrow. Update 2: Our source just hit us again to say that it's two full-on NVIDIA GPUs -- sounds like a Hybrid SLI setup to us, which is pretty wild. Wilder still, they say the MacBook and 17-inch MacBook Pro aren't getting refreshed tomorrow, which we find hard to believe, but we'll see when we see. The biggest update to the new MacBooks —on the inside anyway—is their graphical muscle, which has been hooked up with some Barry Bonds-level steroids. Apple ditched Intel's crummy integrated graphics and chipset (basically the traffic controller between the processor and everything else) entirely, opting for a new one from Nvidia that combines the chipset and a GPU on a single chip—the GeForce 9400M. The MacBook Pro , being more Pro-erer than the MacBook , now rocks two graphics cards—the integrated 9400M and a separate, beefier GeForce 9600M GT. If that swirl of numbers, letters and BS is confusing, here's what's up. Two graphics cards? It sounds crazy, preposterous, retardiculous. It's actually not. It's not unique to the MacBook Pro at all. PC users might be more familiar with Nvidia's Hybrid SLI , which pulls similar dual-card wizardry. In a nutshell , it lets you use the less power-hungry integrated graphics processor when you're doing lighter stuff to save battery, and then when you want a lot of video-crunching Mr. T powah, you can flip on the discrete graphics card. Of course, there's balls-to-the-wall full SLI too, which uses two entirely separate graphics cards in one notebook for Hulk power and about 45 seconds of battery life, like in one of Alienware's beasts . MCP7A series are one of NVIDIA's first nForce chipsets for the Intel platform with a monolithic design. The chipset isn't split-up into northbridge and southbridge anymore. This space-saving design is supposed to be very economical for the company to produce, and for motherboard vendors to come out with attractively priced boards. The chipset embeds a GeForce 9300-class IGP, and supports energy efficient Hybrid SLI and GeForce Boost technologies. The IGP itself is DirectX 10 compliant, and supports Purevideo HD. MSI on its part, seems to be ready with two such micro-ATX boards, as pictured by Fudzilla. The P7NGM-Digital (black PCB) is the higher end board, with HTPC-friendly features. It features an HDMI port, along with DVI and D-Sub ports for display. It features four DDR2 DIMM slots supporting DDR2-800 memory. It uses a 100% solid state capacitor design. The P7NGM-FI (red PCB) is the value offering, that aims to spread the GeForce advantage at a low price-point. Filed under: Hardware One of the big issues in the PC games industry for many years is the use of integrated graphics chips in cheap laptops and desktop PCs. These chip sets, while making these kinds of PCs affordable, cannot run most modern PC games nearly as well as PCs with dedicated graphics cards. Now Nvidia has announced the launch of their new GeForce 9400 chip set which they claim is five times faster than the fastest integrated graphics chip from the main leader in this market Intel . Nvidia claims, according to a VentureBeat report, that the GeForce 9400 "can run all of the top 30 PC games at acceptable speeds". It also has features like physics support and Hybrid SLI. VentureBeat saw a demo of the GeForce 9400 running a number of PC games alongside a Intel integrated graphics chip. VentureBeat states, "The Intel machines just didn't look good - or couldn't even run - games such as Spore , Portal , or The Sims 2. ".
