HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Diversified Hong Kong-based conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa Thursday said its first-half net profit dropped 63% from the same period a year ago to HK$10.69 billion ($1.37 billion). The results were better than expected. The drop in profits was due to the sale of the group's mobile operations in India, which boosted earnings in the year-earlier period. The company, controlled by billionaire Li Ka-shing, said losses before interest and taxes on the group's third generation (3G) operations dropped by as much as 72% to HK$3.18 billion. Glasgow band shoots for the back row on sophomore release Having already demonstrated their rough-around-the-edges charm with its frantic 2007 debut, Frightened Rabbit is just about the last band you’d expect would aspire to arena-sized rock anthems. That they can pull this off while retaining their homespun aesthetic is remarkable, as Midnight Organ Fight startles with its heartfelt directness and sing-along immediacy. The album is singularly focused yet emotionally visceral, refining and sharpening the band’s rousing sprawl. Vocalist/guitarist Scott Hutchison writes songs that tread the fine line between overwrought emoting and startling self-revelation, his wounded Scottish yelp perfectly suited for the unflinching accounts of joyless sex and religious apostasy. Sonically, the differences are small but penetrating, the band using a similarly straightforward palette of dexterous drumming, reverb-heavy electric guitar and homey acoustics. But, this time, Frightened Rabbit favors major-key immediacy over melancholy inhibition. In fact, it's none other than the follow-on to 3's Skypephone of last year -- the aptly-named Skypephone S2 -- offering HSDPA data, a 3.2 megapixel camera, 50MB of memory with a microSD slot for plenty more, and pretty much all the Skype support you can handle (hence the name, we suppose). Skype-to-Skype calls are completely free from the phone, and the Skype service can be kept active by adding £10 (about $19) monthly on a pay-as-you-go arrangement; otherwise, the phone can be had for as little as zilch if you sign up for a monthly plan. It'll work as a broadband dongle, too, which we think officially makes this thing oodles more useful than even the most capable of WiFi phones, skivvies or otherwise.
