Related Articles The Stem Cell Marker CD133 (Prominin-1) is Expressed in Various Human Glandular Epithelia. J Histochem Cytochem. 2008 Jul 21; Authors: Karbanová J, Missol-Kolka E, Fonseca AV, Lorra C, Janich P, Hollerová H, Jászai J, Ehrmann J, Kolar Z, Liebers C, Arl S, Subrtova D, Freund D, Mokry J, Huttner WB, Corbeil D Human prominin-1 (CD133) is expressed by various stem and progenitor cells originating from diverse sources. In addition to stem cells its mouse orthologue is expressed in a broad range of adult epithelial cells, where it is selectively concentrated in their apical domain. The lack of detection of prominin-1 in adult Human epithelia might be explained, at least in part, to the specificity of the widely used AC133 antibody, which recognizes an epitope that appears dependent on glycosylation. Here we decided to re-examine its expression in adult Human tissues particularly in glandular epithelia using a novel monoclonal antibody (80B258) generated against the Human prominin-1 polypeptide. In examined tissues, we observed the 80B258 immunoreactivity at the apical or apicolateral membranes of polarized cells. For instance, we found an expression in secretory serous and mucous cells as well as intercalated ducts of the large salivary and lacrimal glands. In sweat glands including the gland of Moll, 80B258 immunoreactivity was found in the secretory (eccrine and apocrine glands) and duct (eccrine glands) portion. In liver ...

The Central District Health Department has reported a probable case of Human West Nile virus. The victim is a Merrick County resident, a man between the ages of 26 and 60, according to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. The case reported on Tuesday meets criteria for the West Nile virus, but follow-up tests for confirmation will be done in the next few weeks. The Central District's announcement marks the first case of the season -- and comes unusually early in the season. The case heralds an early onset for West Nile, but it is not unexpected, said Jeremy Collinson, CDHD environmental health supervisor. The virus is usually a problem in late summer and early fall, making this an alarming case, he said. The early appearance is largely due to recent and continuing wet weather. "We want to get the word out, let people know now is the time to get ready," Collinson said. According to the DHHS, the first mosquitoes to test positive for West Nile have been found in Dawes, Dawson, Lancaster and Holt counties in Nebraska In the Central District, which serves citizens of Hall, Hamilton and Merrick counties, mosquito trapping in recent weeks has shown a small number of mosquitoes capable of spreading the virus. However, Collinson said, the wet summer weather contributes to a larger mosquito population in general. "We are entering the West Nile danger period earlier than in past years, and precautions should be taken now an ...

(Prudent Press Agency)---The Human form has been the subject of art for thousands of years. Drawings inside cave walls depicting man and woman as stick type figures were early examples of such art. No matter how bizarre the interpretation of the male and female form appears, it's almost always identifiable. They could be drawn round, thin, short, tall, standing up or laying down, with or without faces, with or without limbs and they're still almost always distinguishable as the Human body. Art classes featuring nude models teach students how the body's connected, so that they can begin to sketch and paint it accurately. Students volunteer to pose nude in college art classes all over the country, where they sit motionless for extended periods of time while students attempt to simulate the angles and shadows created by the model's limbs. Models of all different sizes, male and female, are available and provide an opportunity for students to observe and practice a variety of lines, shapes, shadows and contours. Some classes may be sketching, some may be drawing, some may be painting, where they would learn how to mix the flesh colored paint for their subjects. ...
