The first of Arianna Huffington's local news hubs, Huffington Post Chicago has launched, and from the looks of it, the Windy City is an inspired launching pad for the announced local site model . For starters, Chicagoans have John Cusack , who wrote the first blog post on the site's Chicago slate. The Greek food (at least according to Huffington herself ) is divine. And there's a certain Midwestern modesty that makes boasts about Chicago never seem grating. (Getting all excited over a lake , for example... presh!) When L.A. or New York loves itself, outsiders call it "arrogance" or "narcissism." But in Chicago, it's just hometown pride. With this site, the HuffPost is building on their own improvement on the Drudgian aggregation model they have applied with great success to the political realm -- where linking trumps reporting.  Huff Chicago reportedly employs only one paid staffer, who will no doubt toil on the reader's behalf to find the best that other Chicago web sites have to offer. As of today, breaking news headlines link overwhelmingly to stories from the Tribune and Sun-Times, even adopting the old-fashioned headline style that made print media famous ( Cop Shot Wednesday Dies , for instance, and No Convention Spot for Blago --referring to Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, an Obama ally).    The site is another sign that we're being weaned off newspapers as we know them, with their expensive staffs and their writerly approa ...

In the wake of Sen. Ted Stevens' indictment, his GOP colleagues quickly began distancing themselves from the stink by dumping campaign contributions Stevens had doled out through his PAC. Among those playing "Take Back the Money" were Mitch McConnell, Elizabeth Dole, and John McCain. We've seen this game before, when politicians scrambled to rid themselves of donations from Enron and Jack Abramoff. Indeed, Dole has now won the Tainted Money Triple Crown, having divested herself of money from all three. The beauty of this D.C. dance is that it is always accompanied by insistent claims that political contributions have absolutely no impact. But no one ever explains why, if the money doesn't buy influence, there is such a rush to return it. Perhaps the answer can be found on Stevens' Bridge to Nowhere. ...

The makers of Swing Vote , the new film starring Kevin Costner, have pulled off a rare double play, producing a smart political satire that is also heartfelt and moving. It's also a film that turns out to be remarkably relevant to the 2008 race. Costner plays Ernie "Bud" Johnson, a beer-drinking, unemployed resident of Texico, New Mexico who as fate -- and a voting machine error -- would have it, will single-handedly decide a presidential election (sure, it's high concept, but don't forget that in 2000 New Mexico was decided by just 366 votes). The media descends on him, as do both presidential candidates and their win-at-all-costs campaign managers. The film has lots to say about -- and gets plenty of laughs from -- the evils of modern campaigns: pollsters, lobbyists, focus groups, and the inevitable mudslinging and negative ads. The film features a bunch of satiric smear ads launched by the competing candidates -- incumbent GOP President Andrew Boone (Kelsey Grammar) and his Democratic challenger, Donald Greenleaf (Dennis Hopper). You can see them here , here , here , here , and here . But as ludicrous and over-the-top as the film's negative ads are, none of them can hold a candle to the absurd ads unleashed last week by the McCain camp and the RNC. Paris Hilton and Britney Spears ? Really? David Hasselhoff ? John McCain has been waiting his whole life to run for president and the best he's got is Britney, Paris, and the Hoff? A ...

With just ninety days left in the election it's come down to this: our energy policy and a good deal of this presidential campaign are being discussed through the lens of Paris Hilton. What a big goof it all is! If you just ignore all the soldiers and civilians dying in the Mideast, and all the millions losing their homes and their jobs at home, you could really see the lighter side of it all. It all started with McCain's ad comparing Obama to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. And then we had Paris Hilton's "response," followed by the McCain camp's response to Paris Hilton: "It sounds like Paris Hilton supports John McCain's 'all of the above' approach to America's energy crisis -- including both alternatives and drilling. Paris Hilton might not be as big a celebrity as Barack Obama, but she obviously has a better energy plan." Who ever thought this election wasn't going to be about the issues? Of course, it's not exactly a surprise that the Republican election machine would resort to trying to make the entire election into an issueless sideshow. I mean, what else do they have? But it is still a sad spectacle to see John McCain going along with it with such glib eagerness. The man who once pledged to run a "respectful campaign" and who said that Obama "would rather lose a war in order to win a political campaign" has made it clear that he'd rather lose everything he has stood for than lose the White House. As New York Magazine 's J ...

You may have followed the ongoing controversy about the Chinese government blocking foreign journalists' access to certain Internet sites during the Beijing Olympics. Most of the attention has centered on the censoring of the sites of Amnesty International, BBC News and the Falun Gong religious group. Under pressure, the Chinese Communist Party has lifted the bans on Amnesty and BBC News , but one site has continued to be totally blocked: Huffingtonpost.com. In Beijing, we can get Drudge; we can get Common Dreams; we can get Raw Story and Truthout. But Huffington Post: censored completely. I am working in Beijing as a radio commentator. Since I arrived in Beijing, I have made repeated attempts to access Huffington Post from the International Broadcast Center, from the Main Press Center and from my apartment. Nothing, nothing, nothing. Every time, all I get is a message that says "Connection Interrupted." I suspect that I am at least partially responsible for the Chinese censorship of Huffington Post because of a piece I posted back in March entitled " How to Protest the Beijing Olympics ." If this is true, I apologize to my fellow HuffPo bloggers for preventing their posts from being read in China. However, I still stand by what I said back then. In the piece, I urged people not to protest against the Chinese people or against China as a nation -- a nation that I first visited in 1978 and am now visiting for the ninth time. Rather ...

We are rolling out our first local version of The Huffington Post today. We've decided to start with Chicago because it's always been a great news town -- offering a vibrant mix of politics, sports, business, music, food, and urban life. Transferring The Huffington Post's blend of news, opinion, and community -- delivered with our familiar look and attitude -- to a local level, HuffPost Chicago is part local news source, part resource guide, and part virtual soap box -- featuring a collection of bloggers who know and love Chicago, and are looking to share their takes on everything from the Cubs to City Hall to the hot new local band to the best place for Greek food (and I can testify that there is a lot of that in Chicago!). Today's featured lineup includes Chicago-themed blog posts from John Cusack, blogging from Bangkok about his hometown; Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, responding to a recent damning federal report on conditions at the jail under his command; local boy Jonathan Alter on what makes Chicago "His Kind of Town"; Playboy 's Christie Hefner on great summer outings to be found in the city; Esther Cepeda advocating for a Chicago future fueled by nuclear power; and longtime Chicago radio host Edward Lifson, weighing in on what it will take for Chicago to land the 2016 Olympic Games. HuffPost Chicago also features a rotating at-a-glance roundup of local services -- with info and takes on the city's restaurants, clubs, real ...

In today's newsletter is an ad and a few articles referencing our upcoming Digital Marketing Mixer , which takes place this October in Scottsdale, Arizona. I'm pretty excited about the event itself, because the content offers a solid grounding in the Big Three of online marketing. Covering Email, Search, and Social Media, it's a bit like a one-stop-shop for digital marketing know-how, with a terrific lineup of speakers. Of course, hearing Arianna Huffington give our day one keynote address won't be too shabby, either. However you feel about her politics or her publication, Arianna is a perfect fit for an event that focuses on building a business online because, well, she's done it. In other words, whether you agree with her liberal leanings or not, the fact is that she has a proven record of leveraging the power of the Big Three – and more – as demonstrated by the phenomenal growth of her namesake site. As the NY Times wrote this past spring, "When Ms. Huffington, the 57-year-old author and former conservative pundit, announced her plans for The Huffington Post three years ago, many critics dismissed the idea as a digital dinner party for her new liberal friends. But it has grown in ways that few, except perhaps Ms. Huffington herself, expected." Within three years, the Times added, Arianna has broadened her publication from a political blog to something that increasingly resembles a national newspaper, with sections on entertainment, ...

Big box stores like Wal Mart haven't been on the earth forever, and there's nothing saying that form of retail is going to last. You can feel the tipping point. Using Craigslist to buy or sell a used dvd player or a car - either way, one man's junk is another man's treasure. Click here to read in full ...
