We're less than a month away from the start of the NFL season, so it's time to start the impassioned season previews from various writers, bloggers, diehard fans, cooks, TV personalities, and numerous other walks of life whom consider football the only sport worth watching. This year, the previews will be a little shorter, but will hopefully give us enough of a taste so that, come fall, we'll all be officially sick of previews. If you'd like to volunteer to write one for this year, please email me at ajd@deadspin.com There are still some teams in desperate search of an author. Right now: the lovable Houston Texans . Your author is Matthew Campbell. Matt Campbell is the founder of Da Good, Da Bad, and DeMeco His words are after the jump. I get the question a lot. “Texans fan, huh,” they ask. “How’d that happen?” As if I’d just told them I shit my pants. “How did you wind up following them?” They always stressed the “them” the same way I imagine Republican households do when referring to black people. I used to try to explain myself, but even I had to admit that it seemed strange on the surface. Eventually, I stopped trying and simply answered with a shrug. As any Texans fan will tell you, the true test of our fandom came on April 29, 2006, when the team drafted Mario Williams. On that day, the fanbase divided quickly into three distinct groups. There were those that loved the pick. I was in that group, along with about nine other p ...

Filed under: Texans , AFC South , NFL Injuries Okay, for those of you emailing me asking, I just got back from my vacation. My pasty blogger skin avoided sunburn, but unfortunately, almost half the group we went with got some sort of really repulsive stomach bug. I've avoided it so far and am considering covering my entire self in hand sanitizer. In any event, here's various news I missed this last week: * Johnson's Groin Provides Big Scare . That's the dubiously titled article from HoustonTexans.com that describes the training camp scare that Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson had in the last public practice on Saturday. ( HT video above). After having a circus catch, mid season form sort of practice, near the end he felt tightness in his groin and slowed down. He doesn't believe it was a big deal, and went to go sign autographs afterwards without limping.   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

I know, I know...who do the Texans have that could possibly be worth a damn for fantasy purposes? Two words, my friends: Ahman. Green. I jest. I wouldn't draft Ahman Green if my life depended on it. And neither should you. He probably just broke a nail while reading this; that'll keep him out ten (10) weeks, easy. But down to business. The best fantasy option on Houston's roster is: Andre Johnson (WR) : You knew I was going here. For my money, 'Dre is one of the top three (3) WRs in the league, if not the best WR in the NFL. Yes, he missed seven (7) weeks last year with a knee sprain, but he's no injury risk; that's the first time he's missed any real time since he was drafted. And don't underestimate how many balls are heading his way; before last year's injury and after he returned, Andre Johnson was Matt Schaub's favorite target. The Texans haven't shown any ability to consistently run the ball, so you know they're taking to the air early and often this season. Bottom line: Expect a ton of yards and a ton of TDs from Andre Johnson. He's a legitimate No. 1 WR on any fantasy roster. And my fantasy sleeper from the Houston Texans is: Matt Schaub (QB) : Last season's numbers aren't spectacular; I'll give you that, though that was wholly due to some missed games due to cheap shots (I'll always hate you, Drayton Florence). I fully expect, however, that The Schaub is going to stay upright and productive all year. Pencil him in for 3, ...

Houston seems to have adopted the idea that this year is "playoffs or bust." That won't be a goal easily attained. The Texans will have to beat the Colts and Jaguars in their division, and to do that they will need their below-average defense to improve quite a bit. An improved running game could also help them reach that goal. Reuniting head coach Gary Kubiak with offensive line guru Alex Gibbs was a great first step. The additions of running backs Chris Brown and rookie Steve Slaton will also help, and could be what ultimately makes their running attack worth mentioning. Let's look at what other changes they made and how it will affect their fantasy value. QUARTERBACK Matt Schaub/Sage Rosenfels Houston has invested in Schaub and he will be the clear-cut starter this year, but that doesn't mean that he won't be kept on a short leash. Rosenfels filled in for an injured Schaub well last year by throwing for 15 touchdowns and producing very similarly to how Schaub did before he was injured. All that means for this year is that coach Kubiak should feel safe with his quarterback situation and Schaub shouldn't get too comfortable. Schaub was on pace to have a great year before an injury to his non-throwing shoulder sidelined him. Other than that, he has shown little proof that he can be a top-20 quarterback. The coaching staff has faith in the inexperienced signal-caller, and some of that trust may come from his great chemistry with top ...

I was recently asked by the good people at SB Nation 's fantasy site, Fake Teams , to provide a fantasy stalwart and a fantasy sleeper from your Houston Texans as we enter the 2008 season. Without looking, can you guess who I picked? That's right...Petey Faggins! What? Didn't you guys see him last night ? The guy was all over the field! Move him to WR and take advantage of his absurd talent already, Kubes! Better yet, stick him at RB! We know he'll stay healthy, unlike some other people . Seriously though, here's my take . Make sure to check Fake Teams out throughout the year for all of your fantasy needs. ...
