What do you do if you're a GOP candidate locked in a brutal race for re-election and you need to hoodwink voters into embracing your tax policies? Easy: Create a fictitious "hero of the taxpayer" award supposedly bestowed on you by a respected non-partisan watchdog group. TPMmuckraker's Kate Klonick has a great find : Our pal GOP Rep. Don Young, who's fighting for his life in Alaska, is running a new ad saying that he received such an award from a group called Taxpayers for Common Sense. Not to put too fine a point on it, but it just so happens that this is, well, entirely false, as the group tells Klonick. But the real beauty of the tale lies in its kicker. Take a look . ...

Today at 2 PM, the entire House GOP caucus is holding a Capitol rally to support their drill-drill-drill bill, dubbed the “American Energy Act” ( H.R. 6566 ) and being promoted as an “all of the above” approach to energy policy. Their memo, acquired by the Wonk Room, reveals their plans to promote the bill as a panacea for high gas prices. Read the full text of the legislation . As Center for American Progress Action Fund’s Daniel Weiss points out , however, the House GOP is pushing a number of misleading or false talking points. In particular, they grossly overestimate the expected returns on drilling offshore, opening the Arctic Refuge, or mining oil shale—and fail to mention that any such returns would only be noticeable in decades. ...

President Bush pulled the rug out from under Republicans this week when he abruptly dropped his opposition to a massive housing rescue. Their reaction? Good riddance. Three-quarters of House Republicans defied Bush and voted against the package, designed to help 400,000 homeowners stave off foreclosure and inject a dose of stability into jittery housing and financial markets. The split reflected an every-man-for-himself mentality that has taken hold in GOP circles in a challenging political environment in which Bush, with record-low approval ratings, is seen as an albatross around the necks of vulnerable Republicans. "For these members - particularly those on the bubble - there's no percentage in being seen as a Bush lackey," said Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va. The president's decision to drop this threat to veto the bill "probably made it easier to vote against it, because then you don't get beat up for siding with Bush." Only 45 House Republicans - most from areas ravaged by foreclosures and some facing tough re-election fights - backed the bill. Many of them did so holding their noses. "There were a lot of things I didn't like about the bill, but this was the last train leaving the station. ... This was take it or leave it," said Rep. Pat Tiberi, R-Ohio, one of 21 Republicans who originally opposed the housing measure when it was approved in May, but backed the final version on Wednesday. Tiberi, whose district has experienced high rate ...

Because that can be arranged. Remember that the more annoyingly obstructionist and anti-regulatory the GOP is in the House, the more we the GOP base love them for it (something that the Senate GOP's already noted ). Which makes this short video about your disinclination to settle drilling before the August break (courtesy of the NRCC , and said group seems to have gotten the hint on this topic, at least), kind of fun: And (via Hot Air ) running out the clock favors us : Polls indicate voters trust Democrats over Republicans, by substantial margins, to do a better job on energy. The Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll found that 42% of respondents preferred Democrats for dealing with energy policy, versus 22% favoring Republicans. The poll indicated that Democrats' edge on the issue may be slipping; the July poll gave Democrats a 20-point advantage on the issue, versus a 28-point lead in a January poll by The Wall Street Journal and NBC News . Polls of likely voters in four battleground states, conducted this month by Quinnipiac University in partnership with The Wall Street Journal and Washingtonpost.com, show voters in each state say energy policy is more important to them than the war in Iraq. {Bolding mine.} You're also making the WaPo a bit nervous , or perhaps just exasperated: WHY NOT have a vote on offshore drilling? There's a serious debate to be had over whether Congress should lift the ban on drilling in the Outer Continen ...

President Bush spent a second day this week traveling to raise money for Republicans, all out of public view. On Friday, the fundraiser Bush headlined was to help Republican Aaron Schock in his race for the House seat being vacated by longtime GOP Rep. Ray LaHood. Schock's opponent is Democrat Colleen Callahan. The lunchtime event was held at Weaver Farms outside this central Illinois town. Donors paid $500 each to attend, or $5,000 to get a table and a picture with Bush. The total amount raised was not provided by the campaign or the White House. ...

On his junior year abroad trip to the Mideast, Barack Obama is being trailed not only by three network anchors, but by Republican Senator Chuck Hagel. This has led many to speculate that this means Hagel is on the short list to be Obama's VP pick. Other say that picking a Republican running mate would be too much, but that Hagel might be in line for Secretary of State or Defense. At the very least, they're totally going to stay in touch after they get back. But the big question is: when the Republican Party is looking at a long time in the wilderness, do the Democrats really want to create a situation in which the GOP's only chance at the White House is if, you know, something should happen to Obama? All the more reason to ask: just who is Chuck Hagel? ...

Gosh, I didn't see that one coming . Shocked. Absolutely shocked. The Big Food industry has only themselves to blame for losing $250+ million due to food safety issues. They bought influence in Washington and the GOP, as they do, believed the entire "we can self regulate" rubbish. Well duh, it doesn't work for food nor finance nor any other industry. One of the worst outbreaks of foodborne illness in the U.S. is teaching the food industry the truth of the adage, "Be careful what you wish for because you might get it." The industry pressured the Bush administration years ago to limit the paperwork companies would have to keep to help U.S. health investigators quickly trace produce that sickens consumers, according to interviews and government reports reviewed by The Associated Press. The White House also killed a plan to require the industry to maintain electronic tracking records that could be reviewed easily during a crisis to search for an outbreak's source. Companies complained the proposals were too burdensome and costly, and warned they could disrupt the availability of consumers' favorite foods. The apparent but unintended consequences of the lobbying success: a paper record-keeping system that has slowed investigators, with estimated business losses of $250 million. So far, nearly 1,300 people in 43 states, the District of Columbia and Canada have been sickened by salmonella since April. Investigators initially focused on t ...
