From Modern Healthcare: CEO turnover at U.S. hospitals reached record levels in 2009, as the pressures of a long recession weighed on many top executives who were already considering retirement, according to a new report by the Chicago-based American College of Healthcare Executives. In 2009, 18% of nonfederal acute-care hospitals saw turnover in their top job, up from 14% the year before, the annual study found. The total for 2009 tied the all-time record high since the ACHE began compiling the statistics in 1981. ...

Miami Herald Staff Report Facing a massive financial crisis, Jackson Health System CEO Eneida Roldan announced 4,400 layoffs and the shuttering of Jackson South and Jackson North hospitals. Roldan revealed her plan to cut costs during a meeting Friday afternoon of the Public Health Trust, the governing board for Miami-Dade's public health system, which is facing a budget deficit of $229 million. The need for cuts has become more urgent because Public Health Trust members learned Thursday the system lost $23.4 million in January, far worse than the December loss of $14.5 million. Days of cash on hand -- the money needed to pay immediate bills -- was 21.08 days, down from 22.7 in December. Executives worry the system may be out of money by May. Reference Article ...

After a "pretty long, hard winter," Coweta County is at last "receiving a ray of sunshine" with the recent announcement that Piedmont Newnan Hospital is moving forward with its new 136-bed, state-of-the-art Hospital, Coweta County Development Authority Chairman David Brown said Thursday. "I think this Hospital is coming at just the right time," Brown told his fellow development authority members at the Thursday morning board meeting. "After a drought of good economic news, this gives us all a good feeling, just knowing that we've got a state-of-the-art medical facility coming." ...

Last Friday at SHS/ASQ, I heard a talk by Michael Riordan , the CEO of the Greenville Hospital System in South Carolina. He is one of what must be a very small number of Industrial Engineers who made it the CEO level at a health system. I wonder if there’s any study that shows how those hospitals perform compared to MD CEOs and CEOs with other healthcare administration backgrounds. I’m sure there aren’t enough data points to be statistically significant. Riordan made a number of great points about leadership that might sound “like lean” or at least philosophically aligned with Lean. One dysfunction that Riordan highlighted is a real big-picture problem: “We are paid for what we do, not for keeping people healthy.” Healthcare is still often a very piece-work system, what some call “sickness care.” Riordan said his goal was “ Creating a culture of engagement and curiosity” , not just focusing on engineering and measures. This reminds me of the goals of organizations like ThedaCare and the University of Michigan Health System, who talk about having every employee be a problem solver and a process improver. If you’re engaged and you’re curious, that’s a good start toward working on quality and process improvement. He also added a somewhat provocative thought: “I’m not there to make our employees happy.” But real engagement leads to employee satisfaction and patient satisfaction, Riordan says. I think this is the essence of the idea of “ ...

Phyllis Macy-Mills was fired last week. Here's today's story. More probably later this week. What has always seemed weird about this ongoing saga is that there is such tension between the board and the CEO, while at the same time such progress in making the Hospital profitable and getting the bonds approved and construction started on the new facility. We should all have such productive conflict. Something tells me this is just the latest chapter in this story. ...

Mercy Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Kelly Morgan has been chosen to serve on a statewide committee that will help coordinate efforts to recruit, educate and train health care workers in Oregon. Morgan was appointed to the Health Care Workforce Committee, according to a Mercy Medical Center news release. The committee is made up of people from across the state with expertise, knowledge and experience in a range of health professions, health care education and health care workforce development initiatives. The committee is an outgrowth of recently passed legislation designed to reform the state's health care system, said Tina Edlund, deputy director of the Oregon Health Authority, in a phone interview. The legislation set up the Oregon Health Authority to lead the reform effort. A nine-member citizen board, called the Oregon Health Policy Board, oversees the Oregon Health Authority. The committee Morgan will sit on is one of two standing committees of the board, Edlund said. ...
