First, County Commissioner Kristin Jacobs began taking the bus to work on Thursdays. Now, a city leader is touting horse-riding as part of the cause of alternative transportation. Southwest Ranches City Councilman Don Maines has been riding his horse to and from town hall since he was first elected to office six years ago. County officials scheduled a photo opp for the media this morning of Maines arriving Horseback at town hall. Maines keeps a hay bag and water bucket at the town hall to accommodate his horses. He is an avid horseman and enjoys rodeo, trail riding and camping with his horses. “Riding a horse was the original mode of transportation before the automobile,” Maines said in the county-released press statement. “But, unless you live in community like Southwest Ranches you don’t really think of Horseback riding as a way to get around. People here ride their horses all the time.” Green Thursdays is a county publicity campaign launched in June to encourage drivers to give up their car one day a week to help fight global-warming. ... An equine search team today is expected to help in the hunt for a missing Del City woman thought to be a victim of foul play. Nakketa Smith, 31, has been missing since Sept. 13. Her ex-husband, Dontee Johnson, 34, was arrested after police found him with Smith's car and two of Smith's children, Del City police Capt. Jody Suit said. Johnson is jailed on complaints unrelated to Smith's abduction, but he is considered a suspect, Suit said.
