Lava Man was retired Wednesday as thoroughbred Racing's richest claiming Horse after X-rays revealed changes in the Horse's front ankles. The 7-year-old gelding was claimed for $50,000 at Del Mar in 2004 and finished his career with earnings of $5,268,706, and 17 wins in 46 starts. In 2006, Lava Man became the first Horse to win the Santa Anita Handicap, Hollywood Gold Cup and Pacific Classic in the same year. TORONTO - There was a hint of apology in Deborah England's voice, although it was altogether unnecessary. There were no rules against the trainer entering her Horse, Marlang, into the Breeders' Stakes, the third jewel of the Canadian Horse Racing Triple Crown. Still, she felt the need to say sorry. It is just that, without the winners of the first two jewels competing, she did not think there was a good reason to keep Marlang out of the race. "I think they were nice horses. I do. Obviously [third-place finisher] Solitaire is a very nice Horse," England said. "They were a whole different bunch, right? And Marlang was doing well." Judging by the result, there was certainly no need to apologize. The 9-to-1 Marlang, with the fourth-best odds heading into the race, pulled off a stunning wire-to-wire victory in the $500,000 race, held on Sunday on the E.P. Taylor turf course at Woodbine Racetrack. And as much as the win was about the brilliant mile-and-a-half performance Marlang pulled off, it was as much about the horses that were not there. The race lost some of its lustre when the winners of the first two jewels of the Triple Crown did not enter the contest. Both Queen's Plate winner Not Bourbon and Prince of Wales Stakes winner Harlem Rocker did not race Sunday, as both horses are more comfortable on the dirt as opposed to the turf.
