Throughout the 1950's and 60's, William Castle produced and directed a series of Horror films marked by their outrageous audience participation gimmicks. Castle treated moviegoers to buzzing seats, flying skeletons, luminescent ghosts and life insurance policies — and they loved every minute of it. Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story is a documentary about the last great American showman. It is a rags to riches tale of a legend of exploitation and master of self-promotion, yet a man privately plagued by a fear of failure and a desperate desire to be respected among his peers. It is an excellent documentary focusing on an iconic director and we will be glad to have this Film in this years line-up. Not too many directors have contributed more to the Horror genre and was a true showman for the ages. The Chicago Horror Film Festival will hold its annual event on September 26th – 28th at The Portage Theater, 4050 N. Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago, IL. We encourage all Horror filmmakers to submit their films to increase exposure and interest in their efforts. The late deadline is looming near for Film submissions so if you want to be considered, hurry soon. July 29th - Late Deadline ...

So you're stuck at home this summer, pounded by high gas prices, failing banks and a truly dull season of Project Runway . May as well throw in the towel and immerse yourself in some real Horror with the the American Cinematheque's 8th Annual Festival of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror fest . Not only do you get to see the best in blood and guts and alien transformation, you can do it in the gloriously restored (and air conditioned) glamour of one the city's best movie palaces, the  Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, and the lovely Aero in Santa Monica. Our own Susan King has details: On tap for Friday at the Egyptian is a Jack the Ripper double bill: 1959's "Jack the Ripper" and 1965's "A Study in Terror," starring John Neville ("The X-Files") as Sherlock Holmes. Saturday gives us a triple feature with the uncut version of 1970's "The Vampire Lovers" with Peter Cushing, 1960's "The Vampire and the Ballerina" and 1960's "The Tell-Tale Heart." Scheduled for Sunday is the new documentary "Bringing Godzilla Down to Size," as well as the monster classics "War of the Gargantuas" (1966) and 1961's "Mothra." The Aero Theatre presents "The Lord of the Rings" marathon -- the extended versions -- on Saturday, which will be introduced by illustrator-artist Greg Hildebrandt. Director Wayne Wang will be feted for two days at the Aero beginning Wednesday with his latest Film, "A Thousand Years of Good Prayers," and a new cut of 1985's "Dim Sum: ...

About Anansi Boys Gaiman says: "It's a scary, funny sort of a story, which isn't exactly a thriller, and isn't really Horror, and doesn't quite qualify as a ghost story (although it has at least one ghost in it), or a romantic comedy (although there are several romances in there, and it's certainly a comedy, except for the scary bits).” An audio version of the entire text of Anansi Boys , as read by UK comedian Lenny Henry, has also been published by HarperAudio as both regular CDs and as MP3-CDs. I had a ball describing Fear(s) of the Dark to my fellow movie freaks. After really enjoying the Film at last January's Sundance Film Festival (and calling Fantastic Fest Master Chief Tim League to give him the scoop), I made sure to come up with an apt description for the Film. " Hmm, what's it about? " my fellow fest-goers would ask, to which I'd reply " Oh, it's your typical French animated ... Horror ... anthology. In black & white ." The next response was either " Oooh, cool ," (my friends) or " Meh, not my speed ." (total strangers). Created by a collection of gifted graphic artists that includes names like Charles Burns, Romain Slocombe, and Marie Caillou, Fear(s) of the Dark is not exactly a Creepshow -style omnibus, but for genre fans who can appreciate a little culture now and again, I'd call it a very cool little treat. And if you're a big fan of graphic arts or the craft of animation, then I suspect you'll devour this French delicacy with a very large spoon. Plus, best of all, it's creepy! Fear(s) of the Dark opens on in New York City (and On Demand! Like in your living room!) on October 24 before rolling into other towns -- and yep, it's also screening a few times at Austin's Fantastic Fest -- but we're very proud to bring you the first official poster for the Film. Trust me when I say the poster fits the movie quite well. Click below for the noir -ness! Filed under: Animation , Foreign Language , Horror , Sundance , ...

Filed under: Foreign Language , Horror , Independent , Cinematical Indie You can't accuse this movie of false advertising. Tokyo Gore Police , which screened this weekend as part of the seventh annual Asian Film Festival of Dallas (AFFD), bursts at the seams with severed limbs, oceans of bodily fluids, and enough intestines to choke a horse. More sensitive souls will run screaming from the room during the first scene, in which a man's head explodes in a cloudburst of blood, but that sets the tone of the movie as a live-action adult cartoon. Just keep repeating to yourself: "It's only latex and corn syrup, it's only latex and corn syrup ..." Structured very much like a sick and twisted variety show, Tokyo Gore Police is all about the set pieces, which are mighty impressive indeed for fans of "hardcore mega-splatter," as our own Scott Weinberg described a clip he saw a few months ago. In the future, the Tokyo police force has become privatized for the protection of its citizens. That gives them license to execute all criminals with, let us say, extreme prejudice. One strain of bad guys remain a problem, however. Whenever so-called "engineers" lose a body part, the missing limb mutates into a bizarre weapon. I thought Noburu Iguchi's The Machine Girl was insanely over-the-top , but Tokyo Gore Police ups the ante by mixing in generous nods to Paul Verhoeven, especially RoboCop and Starship Troopers . What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend. Most Likely to Suck: Hell Ride Larry Bishop writes, directs, and stars in this throwback to biker exploitation films of the '60s and '70s. The story is about a biker gang that rallies to avenge the violent murder of a fellow gang member. Dennis Hopper, Michael Madsen, and Vinnie Jones also star. We like all those guys, and this sounds like a fun idea for a movie, but sadly the reviews are almost universally bad. We have to reluctantly recommend that you stay away. Trailer - Freshness Showing at: Ritz at the Bourse Boy A The Film adaptation of Jonathan Trigell's award-winning novel tells the story of a man named Jack who's released from prison at the age of 24 after having been institutionalized most of his life for the murder of a child. He has a hard time readjusting to the outside world, but with the fatherly mentoring of his parole officer, Terry, he begins to experience a coming-of-age that would normally have happened years ago. Unfortunately for him, the tabloid press and Terry's real son won't let him be. This looks like a pretty interesting and intense Film, and the critics are mostly appreciative. Trailer - Freshness Showing at: Ritz at the Bourse Baghead When this Horror/comedy played at the Philadelphia Film Festival earlier this year, Phillyists Ross and Jill were not very impressed . But it does have a respectably high freshness rating. So the question beco ...

If dark and depressing movies aren’t your thing,  then you’re not alone. Later this month in Hollywood there will be an entire Film Festival devoted to movies  that make a positive and uplifting contribution to the world. And, as it happens, a writing team of two South Shore women has their screenplay in the finals.     Jenn Dlugos from Weymouth and Andrea Henry from Norton will be attending the Festival at the Egyptian Theater in the heart of Hollywood,  to see if their screenplay, ``Sasha,'' can bring home top prize – $1,000.   ``This is very exciting for both Andrea and me,'' said Dlugos,  who explains she could use the money because she’s in the market for a new couch.    On a serious note, the event is a great place for writers to network and make connections. The Festival takes place at one of the top red-carpet theaters in Hollywood and attracts some very special guests,     ``people like Tom Kenny (``SpongeBob SquarePants'') and Jonathan Winters, so we’re hoping to make good connections with like-minded folks who are looking for family friendly screenplays. But the short-term goal is all about the furniture,'' Dlugos said. Henry and Dlugos are an interesting writing team in that they are so different in their approaches to the trade.     ``We work well together because we’re an ‘Odd Couple,’'' Dlugos said.  ``Andrea’s a realist and doesn’t like fantasy. Last year, New Jersey natives, Jeff Heimbuch and Michael Santo Scardillo, produced Leeds Point , a Film about the legend of the Jersey Devil who is said to haunt the Pine Barrens of South Jersey. This year, the Film won the “Home Grown Horror” and “Audience Choice” awards at the Garden State Film Festival.   With less than $3,000 and no crew, Scardillo and Heimbuch (who began his filming career at William Patterson University) wrote, filmed, directed, and edited the Film in 5 months. The plotline is nothing new—campers disappear in the woods and afterwards, people start pointing fingers. However this time, the culprit is no human; it is an unknown being which people refer to as the Jersey Devil.   New Jersey audiences should be quite familiar with the story behind the monster. Supposedly there have been sightings from the mid-1800s up until now (the most recent in January 2008). A website called “ The Devil Hunters ” claims to be “The Official Researchers of the Jersey Devil.” There are some New Jerseyans who are, needless to say, obsessed.   As legend has it, the Jersey Devil, or Leeds Devil, is a flying creature with a head like a horse, a giraffe-like neck, huge bat wings, long skinny legs, hooves, and a height that ranges from three to seven feet. Its most remarkable feature is perhaps its high-pitched scream.   The devil dates back to a Native American legend about a dragon, but the most commonly known story begins with its ...

Okay, so I finally had a chance to go to this year's UK Horror Festival of the year. One which shows over 30 feature films, short films and trailers all of the Horror-tastic nature. One which runs over a course of five days, indulging in works of Horror directors from around the world. I had missed out on last year's FrightFest since I had made myself ill from overdoing it in pre-production on Beyond The Rave . And the year before that I was broke and if I didn't work then I'd be out on the streets. The year before that, I was totally unemployed (the high life of getting into the Film industry). This year I was going to get my ass down there in some form or another and since I was still working (still always broke) I decided to make an appearance at the world premiere of Eden Lake and the closing Festival Film Death Race . ...
