Internally, Nintendo uses a tool called a "Waikiki adapter" to boot Nintendo Wiis in recovery mode—bricked or not. Now one modder has apparently duplicated the device, a simple flash drive that fits in the GameCube memory port of the Wii, and set a demonstration to some righteous 80s guitar riffs. If commercialized, not only could such a device make Homebrew a whole lot less risky—it could usher in a whole new era of Wii piracy as you can load any code you want from this recovery menu...which would be horrible and awful and evil, of course. Ti-Ra-Nog presents to us his DS brew game, PushIt v0.1.0. It's actually a little old, a little new type of game as it is a modified DDR -ish type of game. Here's what we could get so far from the translation. This game is sort of like DJMax or, as mentioned earlier, DDR . However, the difference is that "with the touch of nds (touch screen) and instead to raise or lower the "keys" to press, these are going toward the center." Pardon the translation, that's the best we can do. Anyway, the screenshots do provide an idea how it goes, and the download link's below. Here's hoping you enjoy. Download: PushIt! v0.1.0 ...

From emu_kidid comes a new bit of Homebrew that'll let you load GameCube games while in Wii mode. As the Wiibrew website describes it, GCBooter is "a simple application which allows anyone to boot their original GC games from Wii mode. It is region free and works from the Homebrew channel." Here are the (very simple) instructions on how to use GCBooter: Just copy the GCBooter folder into your /apps/ folder on your card and run it via the Homebrew channel. Insert your GameCube disc and press A on the GameCube controller a few times. Again, we suggest you consult the readme for installing and using this application. That said, the source code has also been included in this release, so those of you who want to learn from it can do so. Enjoy! Download: GCBooter v1.0 ...

First time Homebrew coder PSPfreak2007 decided to take a brave stab at QJ.NET's PSP Updates Summer Homebrew Contest and entered an interesting new Homebrew game into the mix. Entitled "THE WAY", it's basically a memory game with a simple yet challenging concept. Coded in Lua , the goal of the game is to follow a predetermined path flashed at the start of each level. The player must then follow the same path through a grey and black grid once the highlighted squares disappears. Considering this is a first attempt at a Homebrew game, the program itself is well constructed and should provide players a quick distraction by going through all its levels. You can leave any feedback regarding the game by visiting the developer's project release thread, accessible through the link below. This is a DS Homebrew game from French brew dev philoo. We're not too sure what the French site is saying about the game, but it looks like a type of game where you'll have to drop shells onto the pocketholes until you get all in your "home" pocket". Anyway, if any of you could decipher what this game actually does (cos there's no readme in the file), please do share the information. In the meantime, at least we got the changelog. Here are the changes for this version: Added a 2-Player mode WiFi (local) Added a new tune Some Bug Fix. Download: Awale v1.0 ...

Wii Homebrew developer Amarth describes his game Jump 'n Bump as "bunnies and blood". What an interesting mix, don't you think? This Homebrew game is at version 0.1, so of course you may expect a couple of bugs bunnies getting in the way of fun. That's why it's important that you send in your feedbacks to Amarth so he can deal with them properly. There's not much explanation as to how the game actually plays, but, well, i guess it's got something to do with a cute bunny either going out for a kill, or he's dodging the kill. All I know is that there's gonna be a lot of blood. Whose will it be? Play the brew to find out. Download: Jump 'n Bump v0.1 ...

Raven's got another helpful Wii Homebrew application for all you guys out there. The Menu Loader Clone is... well... a clone of the original, however it does not contain all of its patches. There is, however, a patch included to override the region setting to Japan , US or EU. Raven says he's tested it with version 3.2E Systemmenu. Says he, "The patches are all discovered by me, no reversing of the original menu loader was done (only 'No sound.bin is from sadmenu)." As always, in pursuit of forwarding Homebrew development, comments and suggestions are highly welcome. Here are the controls: [Up/Down] to scroll the list. [Left/Right] to change settings. [A] to launch the menu. [B] to exit. This is a Free Software released under the GNU /GPL License, by the way. And as always, the source is included. If you want to compile it yourself, you have to provide menu_certs.bin, menu_tik.bin and menu_tmd.bin in the data folder. Download: Menu Loader Clone ...

Developer Risike has released his tool to test the performances of Micro Lua DS, the Ball Mark. He explains that this brew app will draw a lot of bounding and rotating balls of various color, size and speed, and to random directions. Further description states that "it will add for one minute and 20 seconds trying to remain at 30 fps. After the alloted time, it will display the maximum number of balls it can display. So far, he's only tested it on GBA and got 58 balls. Unfortunately, he has not yet tested this on a real DS. Here's also what he has to say about the application: In any case can be moved on display 58 images by all possible operations above (change of color, rotation and zoom), which seems quite reasonable given that one can display Maps and a map s' almost as quickly displays an image. Filed under: Culture , Nintendo DS , Hacks , Casual You've probably all but forgotten about a story we ran way back in March in which one Bernie Peng used a Homebrew version of Bejeweled to propose to his girlfriend of three years. Well, Bejeweled publisher PopCap didn't forget about the proposal, helping to make the couple's wedding this Saturday an unforgettable affair. According to the New Jersey Star-Ledger , PopCap chipped in $1,000 for decorations ($500 of which went to a Nintendo DS-shaped cake) and $5,000 for free copies of Bejeweled that were given to all 250 guests. "There are good ways and bad ways to hack software and to us, this is a good way," said PopCap spokesman Garth Chouteau. After a honeymoon in Bali, the happy, nerdy couple will also get a guided tour of Popcap's Seattle headquarters.   Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

Here is a very impressive look at FPS demo for the DS. The demo features full 3D environments, static and dynamic lighting effects as well as a full 3D collisions engine. It uses Payk\'s DS optimized md2 model loader for the models (gun and enemies), but everything else (static and dynamic lights, map loader/renderer, collisions) was written from scratch by Smealum. ...

One aspect of handheld gaming I really need more exposure in is Homebrew, because God knows it’s a huge part of the portable experience.
