Another year, another Olde Home Day. The ninth annual Clinton Olde Home Day will be held Friday and Saturday, Sept. 5-6. This year’s event will be co-hosted by committee members Donna Merriman and William McNally. Seven other committee members, including Mary Carruth-Backiel, Jesse Rives, Diana Doering, John Merriman, Laura Taylor, Rachel Vanasse and Mary Sulkoski, also figure to play a large hand. Merriman has been involved with Olde Home Day since its beginning in September 2000. She said the event has become increasingly popular because of new events added each year. A shuttle bus will be included at this year’s event, which Merriman said would alleviate parking issues. “Parking is an issue, we try to get them not to park around the perimeter of [Central] Park,” she said. “We’re gearing towards the Clinton Elementary School as a potential pickup and drop-off site, and the bus would be traveling back and forth all day.” According to McNally, Clinton Savings Bank will sponsor the bus. Merriman also said the food tent would be brought to the Walnut Street side of Town Hall to help food vendors’ access to electricity. “There wasn’t a lot of power on the street. If we bring the vendors closer to the outlets [from the Town Hall steps], we could have more electricity.” A new band, Stone Clover, will play on Friday evening of part of this year’s celebration.   McNally, who has also been involved since with the program since 2000, said ...

For several years now my wife and I have been unsatisfied with the size of our kitchen. When we first bought our house we were won over by the beautiful views over the cliffs and out towards the sea and overlooked the size and shape of the interior of the house. Now we have lived in therefore a few years the walls have started to close in and we are overcome with a need for more space. With two teenage daughters, two cats and a dog the house is often a very busy place and when the girls have friends over for dinner (which seems to be almost every night) the kitchen is inevitably the busiest room. We have managed to fit some lovely features into the kitchen despite the size but I can’t help feeling that the blue Smeg fridge and the lovely Aga would be better displayed in more majestic surroundings. Source - http://www.flickr.com/photos/domc/1744740908/ Considering the current market I have come to the decision that it would be unwise to move house and also regrettable to lose the fantastic view so we have decided on the compromise of a conservatory. I have purchased the relevant building tools to make a start on the foundations myself (as I used to build as a trade many years ago) and I have got an architect from a well known conservatory company to design something suitable for my Home.   Only thing left to do now is apply for the planning permission and away we go! ...

Reuters and Bloomberg both reported today that GMAC's Home Loan Unit will fire 5,000 employees, or 60 percent of its staff, and close all 200 GMAC Mortgage retail offices because of "weak real estate markets." Mirko Mikelic, senior portfolio manager at Fifth Third Asset Management, said, " This gives you a full flavor of how terrible the mortgage market is [. . .] The past year has been horrible and it doesn't look like there is any improvement on the horizon with continuing declines in Home values and rising delinquencies." GMAC will also stop offering Home loans through its GMAC Home Services and noncore mortgage servicing businesses. This is further evidence that we're not anywhere near the end of the mortgage crisis or recovering, because, if we were, GMAC would have been able to weather the storm. The U.S. has still not felt the effects of the Option ARM resets that will take place next year, and until that period is over (2010 maybe?), we won't see any indications that the economy and housing markets are recovering. What is interesting to note is the contrast between the two Party Conventions that have been taking place over the last ten days. The Democrats harped extensively on how down the economy is -- particularly the middle class, who've been affected most by the mortgage crisis -- and offered solutions to fix a broken bank regulatory system, however, the Republicans, in two days of their convention, have yet to mention ...
