Any Home theatre techies out there? As I mentioned a few times before, the new house has resulted in new furniture and electronics purchases. Our latest project being improving our Home Entertainment center in our family room. More specifically, my wife has the urge to throw our "old" TV of 5 years out the window. Our current system consists of a 32″ CRT TV (that weighs a ton), a standard DIVX/DVD player, a base model Yamaha amplifier and a couple Polk Audio floor standing speakers. So this got me thinking, how can I get the best bang for my buck while being relatively "future proofed" for the next little while? These days, you can't even buy CRT televisions anymore, everything is either plasma or LCD. Being a gadget geek myself, I have to admit I was a little excited about the thoughts of a shiny new flat screen high definition TV. After doing a bunch of research on TV technologies and the optimal screen size for our family room , I decided on getting a 1080p LCD 42″ TV. Now cames the hard part, which brand/model TV will bring me great picture quality at the best price possible? With hundreds of models to choose from, I started my search with the well known high end LCD TV's like the Sony Bravia, Sharp Aquos, and Samsung. Their prices were in the high range ($1300-$1600+tax) for the size TV that I was looking for and they didn't seem to go on sale very often. As a guy who doesn't buy anything unless it's on sale, my wife ...

Last weekend, I covered the pre-concert excitement of the Miley Cyrus show at MGM Grand. Because tickets were $150, $250 and $350, parents who coughed up the cash for their children to see the teen sensation faced a backlash in online chatter afterward, especially given the news of the imploding economy. Some people seemed angry that parents were being what they perceived as lavish — some even mentioned the $700 billion bailout proposed by the Bush administration to staunch the collapse of Wall Sreet and free up frozen credit. But given the excitement of seeing Cyrus, I’m sure parents had bought the tickets well in advance of the economic tsunami that has reached our shores. I believe how people choose to spend their money is personal and no one else’s business. That argument, however, is on a bit of shaky ground as we discover that others’ bad decisions in pushing mortgages on people who couldn’t afford them is coming Home to roost upon us all in a complex economy in which we are inter-linked. And another troubling aspect of our crisis is the fact Americans aren’t saving their money — we have a negative savings rate as a nation, and that will menace the stability of the American family as a recession descends. So how do families cope with the recession we are told will be long, and hard? How does Entertainment fare in bad economic times? Movies, in particular, do well. They buoyed spirits in the Great Depression, and in the last ...

Families around the country are tightening belts and trimming budgets. But according to Ryan Evans, owner of Atascadero’s Coast Satellite TV & Home Electronics, one area they’re not cutting back on is Home Entertainment. In fact, sales of high-definition televisions are on the rise at his Atascadero store, which offers a full spectrum of Home electronics along with satellite Internet and television. “If anything, sales have increased since the economy has slowed,” Evans said. “People look at high-definition TV as an investment in their Home. They think, if we can’t go on vacation this year, at least we have the enjoyment of watching movies at Home.” The plummeting price of high-definition sets is another reason for the electronics boom, according to Evans. “It’s now something that the average person can afford,” he said, noting that a 52-inch high-definition television that cost $4,000 a year ago can now be had for around $2,000. ...

September 5, 2008—Italy’s SIM2, whose striking, high-performance HD Home-theater projectors are known worldwide for their pristine video and dramatic cabinet designs, is partnering with U.S. firm Entertainment Experience, LLC to create the first “better than Blu” solution for high-end Home theater installations. SIM2 and Entertainment Experience, which heretofore focused on unique digital media products for the commercial cinema, education, and hi-tech display market spaces, announce that they will begin offering a hardware-software content solution—including pre-loaded, fully licensed motion picture content—that delivers better-than-HD digital video performance to Home buffs. SIM2 and its partner will demonstrate this impressive new Digital Entertainment Solution Home theater reference at the 2008 CEDIA Show in Denver, CO. “The time has come for top-tier Home theater content to move beyond HDTV standards, to a format that can truly equal archival-quality film for visual content,” says SIM2’s VP of Marketing and Sales, Charlie Boornazian, “SIM2 already has the display technologies well in hand to allow us to begin migrating these technologies from the commercial digital-cinema world, while Entertainment Experience has the know-how and access to help make this a practical reality. Together, we are opening the next era of Home-theater performance.” According to Jim Sullivan, ex-Kodak Digital Cinema exec and now President of Entertainment ...
