TEL AVIV, Israel - After a 43-year wait, Paul McCartney performed his first concert in Israel on Thursday, kicking it off with the familiar Beatles' song "Hello, Goodbye" to the joy of tens of thousands of cheering fans. McCartney billed the concert "Friendship First," saying he's on a mission of peace for Israel and the Palestinians. Singing "Give Peace a Chance," he stopped and let the audience sing the chorus alone. "Here tonight you sang it, you want it," the 66-year-old rocker said. He dedicated the song to his fellow Beatle, John Lennon, who was killed in New York in 1980. Fireworks lit the sky as McCartney sang "Live and Let Die." A crowd made up of Israelis of all ages, estimated at 40,000, cheered as McCartney performed outdoors in Tel Aviv's Yarkon Park on a warm late summer night. Some wore T-shirts with the slogan, "I love Paul." He greeted the crowd with a mixture of English and Hebrew, wishing them "shana tova," happy new year, ahead of next week's Jewish new year Holiday. He added "Ramadan kareem" in Arabic, a greeting to Muslims, who are marking their holy month. His repertoire included many Beatles hits, as well as songs from his post-Beatles group, Wings. The songs included "Yesterday," "Back in the USSR," "Hey Jude" and "Jet." He added two encores. Nadav Erez, 31, from the central Israeli city of Rishon Lezion, danced enthusiastically throughout the concert. "He should have come here long ago, he should have com ...

One of the nice things about living in Oregon is that our colleges and universities start their fall term later than many other places, which means we get to let summer live in our minds until the very last day of the season! But now everyone's back in school, the equinox is upon us, and it's time to put away those shorts and skirts and t-shirts that (if we're honest) were really too small for us anyway, and focus on all things autumnal. Which is great when you have an interview with Neal Stephenson ( Anathem ) to read over a mug of steaming cider. Who needs long bike rides in the sun when we've got original essays by Dexter Filkins ( The Forever War ) and Donald Worster ( A Passion for Nature )? INK Q&As by Francine Prose ( Goldengrove ) and Howard Blum ( American Lightning ) set off enough Fireworks to make that July Holiday a faint memory, and there are always guest bloggers Robert Kuttner ( Obama's Challenge ) and Kenny Shopsin ( Eat Me ) to keep us from noticing the rain that's just starting to tap against our windows. ... Hamilton residents are still being advised not to drink the town water, however Hamilton Public Works Director John Tomasz said samples of the water taken over the weekend should be back tomorrow afternoon. At this time, the water should be considered safe to drink. Hamilton’s water supply has been under stringent testing over the Holiday weekend and into early this week after test results from mid-August reported high levels of perchlorate in the water. Residents were notified last Friday, Aug. 29 that laboratory results from a Aug. 13 sampling of water from the Idlewood Water Treatment Plant showed 32.2 parts per billion (ppb) of perchlorate. A sampling from the School Street well was also found to contain 44.4 ppb of the chemical, and was turned off by the town. Massachusetts’ maximum contaminant level for perchlorate is set at 2.0 ppb. Perchlorate is an inorganic chemical use most commonly as an oxidizer in Fireworks, blasting agents and in other industrial products. It can also develop from a chemical used in the water treatment process. The town’s water supply was deemed undrinkable and residents were further cautioned against boiling the water or using it food preparation; however, bathing and skin contact with the water were allowed. Each household was responsible for supplying bottled water over the weekend and into the early part of the week while more testing was conducted. A second sample was taken from the water plant ...

Contact Lauren@somdems.org for further information. *************** Last weeks countywide caucus in Waltham was a very exciting event, there were lots of candidates running for the Democratic nomination for Middlesex County Register of Probate seat, which will appear, on the ballot in November. Four orderly ballots were taken before the winner, Ms. Tara DeChristofaro from Medford, who already works at the Registry, won. Rumors were flying about deals here and there, but on the last ballot, Tara beat out Sean O’Donovan by a wide enough margin. In the end, unity prevailed amongst the Democratic members present and they applauded Ms. DeChristofaro for her victory. ... Source: www.scubaboard.com --- 7 days ago
