“It was like: play one game, go in the locker room, get some water, go out and play another game.” That was what Joe Zingarelli, a Middleton resident, had to say about the recently completed Hockey Night In Boston Summer Showcase Tournament. He wasn’t alone in bemoaning the 34-year-old tournament’s directors’ decision to go to 30-minute games and no less than three per day per team. Each of the 18 teams at the Showcase played 10 games in four days. Boxford’s Keaton Cashin, who has been doing Hockey Night In Boston, Inc.’s tournaments for more than five years, hopes that they’ll go back to two to three weeks for the Showcase. “They should have more time in the games, they shouldn’t be crowding them together,” said Cashin, who will be a senior at Masconomet this winter. “I guess they’re trying to save the expense in ice, and to get people in, but I’d like it if they were to expand a little bit.” Echoing his North Shore teammates’ sentiments, Nicholls didn’t like the rushed feeling of the tournament. “It’s tough to keep yourself in the game when you have three games in one day,” said Nicholls, a former Masconomet player going into his second year in the Valley Jr. Warriors’ organization. “You can usually dry your equipment overnight for the next day, but with this, you had to put on wet equipment. That was tough.” But, on the positive side, all the Players were happy to be a competitive North Shore team that went 6-3-1 and reached the sec ... Source: www.nhl.com --- 30 days ago

For those ready to carve up the ice for the Rochester Ice Cats, it’s that time of year. On Sept. 11, the Cats will hold registration for the ice Hockey program for the developmentally disabled at the Greece Canal Ponds Millennium Lodge at 5:30 p.m. The cost is $65, which takes care of insurance and outfitting the Players. “We usually get participants from 10 to 45 years old,” said Betsy Simmons, co-founder of the Ice Cats. “We really try to make it as cost-feasible as possible.” Nine years ago, Simmons and her husband, Tom, of Greece, created the Ice Cats after coaching floor Hockey for many years. As part of the U.S. Hockey Association, they also were coaches for the Special Olympics. “We and the kids wanted to do something different other than floor Hockey,” she said. “It was a good transition. Most of the kids have athletic ability.” The Ice Cats specialize in teaching ice Hockey to individuals with developmental disabilities. With no age groups or tryouts, Players are taught how to skate, hold a stick, handle a puck, pass, take a shot and make saves. “It is so nice to see improvement in the kids,” Simmons said. “For a lot of the kids, they’ve never been away from home, so that, too, is a good experience. The most important thing is that they learn how to get along with other and everyone helps each other out.” In addition to the Simmonses and occasional parent involvement, several high school athletes come by to lend a hand.
