Brandon Dubinsky's power-play marker late in the third period proved to be the Game-winner, as the New York Rangers kicked off the 2008-09 campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 triumph over the new-look Tampa Bay Lightning from the O2 Arena. Markus Naslund also scored for the Rangers, who were ousted in the second round of the playoffs last season by eventual conference champion Pittsburgh in five games. Henrik Lundqvist, a Vezina Trophy nominee in each of his first three seasons in the league, stopped 20-of-21 shots to get the win. Martin St. Louis lit the lamp for the Lightning, who made a bevy of moves in the offseason to alter a roster that finished dead last in the NHL in 2007-08. Mike Smith was strong between the pipes, making 39 saves in a losing effort. The Game marked the return to the bench for Lightning coach Barry Melrose, who coached his first Game since he piloted the Kings in 1994-95. Melrose replaced John Tortorella, who was fired in June. Steven Stamkos, the top pick in the 2008 draft, recorded two shots in 8:25 of ice time for Tampa Bay. ... Source: www.moreover.com --- 39 days ago

The Philadelphia Flyers announced Wednesday that the world's most suddenly-famous Hockey mom will drop the puck for the ceremonial opening faceoff on Saturday. Vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin will be at centre ice as the Flyers meet the New York Rangers in their home opener at the Wachovia Centre. It might not be an entirely savvy choice in the hugely divided United States to bring out a candidate for national office in a building named for a crumbling financial institution, as political writer Jonathan Martin pointed on his blog out after the announcement. "Hockey fans, especially in Philly," he wrote, "are not known for their manners. Palin will certainly receive a mix of boos and cheers upon being introduced." Not quite as emphatic as the headline on the Flyers press release: "World's Most Popular Hockey Mom To Drop Puck." ... Source: www.bignewsnetwork.com --- 1 day ago

Wayland field Hockey started the week out strong with a home Game against Tyngsboro on Monday, Sept. 29. It was a well-matched Game and the Warriors struggled throughout to beat Tyngsboro's strong tackles. Senior Matti Starr scored the Game's first goal 21 minutes into the first half, thanks in part to a smooth assist from fellow senior Brooke Baker. Wayland went on to score two more goals in the second half. Senior Liz Alexander scored off of an assist by senior Kelly MacDonald just four minutes into the second half. The Game's highlight came 15 minutes in as Emily Andresen scored with a powerful drive off of a corner. Prevailing through an insufferable mosquito situation and imminent rain, the Game ended in a 3-0 victory for Wayland. This Game was the fourth shutout for sophomore goalies Haley Nickerson and Val Eisenson, who prevented a combined 10 shots from penetrating Wayland's cage. The Warriors were unfortunately unable to protract this domination, and it is understood that they could not expect to. The Thursday Game against Concord-Carlisle was anticipated to be one of the season's toughest. The match was played on C-C's new turf on a brisk but sunny day. The Warriors were able to maintain an equal prospect until C-C's Juliana Granno scored on goalie Haley Nickerson 17 minutes in. Wayland was able to stave off additional C-C advances for the rest of the half, with impressive saves made by Nickerson. The second half provide ... Source: www.michigandaily.com --- 4 days ago
Every time Ohio State scored, Michigan sophomore forward Alicia Mayer was there to answer. In a Game where it was severely outshot (15-7) and outcornered (10-1) by a talented Buckeyes squad, the Michigan field Hockey team relied on gritty defense, solid goaltending and a pair of markers from Mayer in a 3-2 victory yesterday at Phyllis Ocker Field. read more ...
