Related Articles Role of diffusion-weighted imaging in the diagnosis of gynecological diseases. Eur Radiol. 2008 Oct 7; Authors: Namimoto T, Awai K, Nakaura T, Yanaga Y, Hirai T, Yamashita Y Recent technical advances in diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) greatly enhanced the clinical value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the body. DWI can provide excellent tissue contrast based on molecular diffusion and may be able to demonstrate malignant tumors. Quantitative measurement of the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) may be valuable in distinguishing between malignant and benign lesions. We reviewed DWI and conventional MRI of the female pelvis to study the utility of DWI in patients with gynecological diseases. Although the ADC can help to differentiate between normal and cancerous tissue in the uterine cervix and endometrium, its utility may be limited by the large overlap of the uterine myometrium and ovaries. On the other hand, the ADC may be useful for monitoring the therapeutic outcome after uterine arterial embolizati (UAE), chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. In patients with ovarian cancer, DWI demonstrates high intensity not only at the primary cancer site but also in disseminated peritoneal implants. When added to conventional MRI findings, DWI and ADC values provide additional information and DWI may play an important role in the diagnosis of patients with gynecological diseases. Role of RhoA in Activity-Dependent Cortical Axon Branching. J Neurosci. 2008 Sep 10;28(37):9117-9121 Authors: Ohnami S, Endo M, Hirai S, Uesaka N, Hatanaka Y, Yamashita T, Yamamoto N During development, axon branching is influenced by sensory-evoked and spontaneous neural activity. We studied the molecular mechanism that underlies activity-dependent branch formation at horizontally elongating axons (horizontal axons) in the upper cortical layers, focusing on Rho family small GTPases. Axonal labeling with enhanced yellow fluorescent protein showed that horizontal axons formed several branches in organotypic slice cultures. This branch formation was considerably increased by introducing constitutively active RhoA and was slightly inhibited by dominant-negative RhoA. Activators and inhibitors of endogenous RhoA signaling also promoted and inhibited branching, respectively. Daily imaging of horizontal axon growth further demonstrated that constitutively active RhoA increased the dynamic addition and loss of branches. Moreover, the amount of active RhoA relative to the total amount of RhoA was examined by a pull-down assay in cortical slices treated with sodium channel or glutamate receptor blockers to reduce neural activity. Activity blockade significantly decreased active RhoA compared with normal culture conditions, in which spontaneous firing is prominent. These findings suggest that RhoA signaling acts as a positive regulator for activ ... Source: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov --- 33 days ago
Related Articles Diffusion abnormality in the posterior cingulum and hippocampal volume: correlation with disease progression in Alzheimer's disease. Magn Reson Imaging. 2008 Sep 2; Authors: Nakata Y, Sato N, Nemoto K, Abe O, Shikakura S, Arima K, Furuta N, Uno M, Hirai S, Masutani Y, Ohtomo K, Barkovich AJ, Aoki S The purpose of this study was to determine correlations among disease progression, diffusion abnormalities in the posterior cingulum and hippocampal volume in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). We studied 25 AD patients by neuropsychological testing, including the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and by magnetic resonance imaging, including diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and high-resolution three-dimensional T1-weighted imaging. The MMSE score was used as an indicator of disease progression. Diffusion tensor tractography of the posterior cingulum was generated from the DTI; mean diffusivity (MD) and fractional anisotropy (FA) were measured in co-registered voxels along the posterior cingulum. Hippocampal volume was measured using automated voxel-based morphometry. The relationships among MMSE score, hippocampal volume and MD and FA of the posterior cingulum were evaluated by bivariate correlation analysis. MD in the posterior cingulum correlated significantly with the MMSE score. No significant correlation was seen between FA and MMSE score and between hippocampal volume and MMSE score, FA or MD. Our results sugges ... Source: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov --- 25 days ago

Surg Today. 2008;38(3):279-82 Authors: Inui H, Watatani M, Hashimoto Y, Hojo T, Hirai K, Yamato M, Fujishima M, Azumi T, Shiozaki H Stereotactic vacuum-assisted (Mammotome) breast biopsy is a powerful diagnostic tool for detecting microcalcifications on mammography, but it is difficult to remove the targeted lesion precisely when subsequent breast-conserving surgery is to be carried out. We achieved satisfactory results by performing hematoma-directed breast-conserving surgery after stereotactic Mammotome biopsy in seven patients. To identify the exact location of the Mammotome biopsy during the breast-conserving surgery, we created an iatrogenic hematoma in the biopsy cavity using patient's blood. This hematoma was detected easily on intraoperative ultrasonography in all patients, and was palpable as a soft mass in five of the seven patients. The microcalcifications were completely removed in all patients, and no cancer cells were found in the margin surfaces after breast-conserving surgery. There were no complications during the injection of the patient's blood into the biopsy cavity or during the hematoma-directed surgery. We describe this new procedure of hematoma-directed breast-conserving surgery following Mammotome biopsy for nonpalpable cancer with microcalcifications. PMID: 18307007 [PubMed ... Related Articles Antiplatelet cilostazol is beneficial in diabetic and/or hypertensive ischemic stroke patients. Subgroup analysis of the cilostazol stroke prevention study. Cerebrovasc Dis. 2008;26(1):63-70 Authors: Shinohara Y, Gotoh F, Tohgi H, Hirai S, Terashi A, Fukuuchi Y, Otomo E, Itoh E, Matsuda T, Sawada T, Yamaguchi T, Nishimaru K, Ohashi Y BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although antiplatelets are known to be effective for secondary prevention of cerebral infarction, the number needed to treat is rather large and the effects in stroke patients with complications such as hypertension or diabetes are inadequately defined. This study was conducted to examine the effect of such complications on recurrence of cerebral infarction, and to assess the effect of cilostazol, an antiplatelet agent, in these high-risk subjects. METHODS: A post hoc subgroup analysis of the already reported Cilostazol Stroke Prevention Study, which was a placebo-controlled double-blind trial, has been carried out to clarify the influence of various complications on recurrence in the placebo group and the effects of cilostazol in 1,095 patients with noncardioembolic ischemic cerebrovascular disease. Treatment continued for an average of 1.8 +/- 1.3 years (maximum 4.8 years). RESULTS: The recurrence rate of the diabetic stroke patients was significantly higher compared with the nondiabetics in the placebo group (9.4 vs. 4.7%/year, p = 0.01). Furthermore, our study ...

Sony's been touting PSP and PS3 interoperability for awhile now. If you remember, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai once famously noted Ridge Racer as a highlight of the connectivity. Now the teams behind one of Sony's flagship shooters might finally deliver. The official PlayStation blog has revealed the ability to connect Resistance 2 to the PSP-exclusive Resistance: Retribution , which will yield exclusive new modes and an additional way of playing. With the platforms connected via a USB cable, users can select "Infect your PSP!" in the Resistance 2 options menu. This unlocks "Infected" mode, which has an alternate story where protagonist James Grayson "is recruited by Specter Lieutenant David LaSalle and is infected with a mutated version of the Chimeran virus...a different version of the virus that infects Nathan Hale." In this mode, Grayson will also wear a Specter uniform, have glowing eyes, and use a .44 Magnum with explosive rounds that can be triggered remotely. Additionally, he'll regenerate his health and have the ability to breathe underwater. Unfortunately this mode only lasts until the PSP is powered down. ... Source: www.eurogamer.net --- 79 days ago

Between penetrating interviews and marathon gaming sessions, the staff of Level Up has been known to click over to The Drudge Report for up-to-the-minute headlines in news, politics and gossip. A few minutes ago, we came across the following headline: " PUTIN TOPS VANITY FAIR NEW ESTABLISHMENT LIST; MURDOCH NO. 2... " We clicked on the story, where, lo and behold, we found the entire 100-slot list from the October issue of Vanity Fair. Here's how Vanity Fair describes the highly scientific methodology behind its rankings system: The Vanity Fair 100 represents a global, movable band of thinkers, owners, creators, and buyers who are the tastemakers, trendsetters, opinion formers and agenda creators in the worlds of politics, entertainment, media, business, technology, and fashion. Entry into the ranks of the V.F. 100 is based on a number of factors: wealth and influence, as well as such intangibles as vision, philanthropy, and the x factor. Being named to the list is considered to be an honor of some prestige, and, in the past, we've known publicists who've spent considerable time and effort to ensure that their clients would be so recognized. Previous videogame-related honorees include Electronic Arts chairman Lawrence (Larry) F. Probst III in 2004 (#32, between actor Tom Cruise at #31 and Fox News chief Roger Ailes at #33) and 2005 (#33, below Ailes at #32 but above Cruise at #34). PlayStation CEO Kaz Hirai hasn't yet made the list, bu ... Source: reviews.cnet.com --- 17 days ago
(Credit: Automotive News ) TOYOTA CITY, Japan -- For a taste of future fuel-efficient styling from Toyota, go no further than the FT-HS hybrid sports car. It is counterintuitive, high-tech, and unconventional. But global design chief Wahei Hirai says the FT-HS will form the foundation for all future styling as Toyota Motor Corp. tries to squeeze every mile from a gallon of gasoline. The angular, low-slung FT-HS is just a concept. But its design elements already are incorporated into Toyota's iQ minicar, which will be on the streets in Japan and Europe in five months. The new styling also will surface in upcoming hybrids, where green-conscious customers appreciate avant-garde looks. From a design point of view, the goal is to make air-slicing cars even more slippery. "Aerodynamics have always been important, but today they are getting more and more important," Hirai says. "We are paying very serious attention to very small details." ... ... Source: www.indiewire.com --- 39 days ago
