I'm sure you're wondering, so here it is, compiled from Baseball-Reference, the list of sacrifice flies to end playoff games, all seven of them... 1911 WS Game 5: Fred Merkle (NYG) off Eddie Plank (PHA) 1912 WS Game 8: Larry Gardner (BOS) off Christy Mathewson (NYG)* 1971 WS Game 6: Brooks Robinson (BAL) off Bob Miller (PIT) 1980 NLCS Game 3: Denny Walling (HOU) off Tug McGraw (PHI) 1991 WS Game 4: Jerry Willard (ATL) off Steve Bedrosian (MIN) 2004 ALDS Game 2: Hideki Matsui (NYY) off J.C. Romero (MIN) 2007 ALCS Game 2: B.J. Upton (TAM) off Mike Timlin (BOS) * - Game 2 of the 1912 World Series was a 6-6 tie after 11 innings, one of three tie games in Series history. So Game 8 was the decisive game. Having been at the Matsui sac fly game in '04, I don't think I've ever seen a more tension-packed play. With a home run, you usually know it's got a chance, or if it's gone. On a game-ending sac fly, you're wondering if it's deep enough, the ball seems to hang up forever, and then you've got a short throw to the plate because outfielders play shallow in those situations. That it wasn't a close play in Game 2 of the ALCS is shocking, and really shows how poorly J.D. Drew played that ball. He did have a long way to run to catch the ball near the foul line, but the appropriate way to play it is to circle behind the ball so that you can catch it with your momentum going forward, enhancing the throw to the plate -- Chad Curtis was the best ...

This is a very quiet locker cleanout day, since most of the guys took care of stuff before the last road trip. So far we've talked to Jose Molina and Humberto Sanchez. Francisco Cervelli is here, and so is Hideki Matsui, but Matsui hasn't talked yet and Cervelli's not in high demand. Heading in for a press conference with Joe Girardi in a minute. No word yet on Cashman. Anybody want to chime in with MVP/Least Valuable Player thoughts for the Yankees? Or award candidates around the league? ...

Joe Girardi described today as a "Game 7." The Red Sox won earlier, so the Yankees' only hopes at postseason play involve them winning every game and the Red Sox losing every game. Girardi and Derek Jeter both had press conferences and seemed rather nostalgic, Girardi in a happy way and Jeter a little bit sad, I thought. Bernie Williams is in the house, as I'm sure you are happy to hear. The New York Yankees plan to retain Joe Girardi as manager next year. "Joe will be back," co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner said Monday at the club's spring training complex. "He's done everything he could. That's the bottom line." Girardi is in his first season managing the Yankees after agreeing to a three-year contract last October. The team is likely to miss the playoffs for the first time since 1993, but Girardi wasn't expected to be fired. New York has been hit hard by injuries to ace Chien-Ming Wang, catcher Jorge Posada, pitcher Joba Chamberlain and slugger Hideki Matsui. The offense has struggled and the back end of the rotation has been largely ineffective. Still to be resolved is who the Yankees general manager will be in 2009. Brian Cashman's contract is up this year, and Steinbrenner said discussions on a possible extension will take place after the season. ...

St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - Mike Mussina pitched into the seventh inning, and Xavier Nady and Alex Rodriguez both homered as New York bested Tampa Bay, 7-2, in the opener of a three-game set from Tropicana Field. Rodriguez led off the eighth inning by blasting his 30th home run of the year over the wall in center off Jason Hammel. It was also the 548th career homer for the reigning AL MVP, tying former Philadelphia Phillies Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt for 12th on the all-time big league list. Mussina (17-7) allowed two runs on 10 hits while walking one and striking out eight for the Yankees, who won their second straight game but trail the Rays by 11 games in the AL East and Boston by seven games in the wild card race. Damaso Marte along with Joba Chamberlain and Dan Giese, who were both activated off the disabled list before the game, combined for three innings of scoreless relief to close things out. Johnny Damon added an RBI triple for New York, while Hideki Matsui had a run- scoring single. ...

Bobby Abreu had a solo home run and finished 3-for-4 with three runs driven in and two scored, missing the cycle by a double, as the New York Yankees kept their fleeting postseason hopes alive with a 7-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners in the middle duel of a three- game set. Jason Giambi went 3-for-5 with a solo blast, two RBI and a pair of runs scored for the Yankees, who have won four of six and moved within 7 1/2 games of the Boston Red Sox for the lead in the Wild Card race. Xavier Nady and Hideki Matsui each drove in a run in the win. Sidney Ponson (8-5) lasted six innings and yielded three runs on five hits while taking the win. Mariano Rivera recorded the final four outs to secure his 33rd save of the year. ...

Filed under: MLB Biz , MLB Rumors International Pastime looks at baseball's influence outside the U.S. You've probably noticed over the last few years there have been a lot more players in MLB with names that are hard to pronounce, or just sound dirty. Yes, Japan is quickly becoming the new Latin America as just about every team these days is adding a Japanese player to their roster. It's hard to blame them for it, as guys like Ichiro Suzuki , Daisuke Matsuzaka , Hideki Matsui , and Akinori Iwamura are proving themselves to be pretty good players. It's also nice to have a Kosuke Fukudome around for a fan base to blame for everything. Of course, on the flip side of this equation is Japan. Due to the amount of Japanese players crossing the Pacific for the honor of facing off against John Lannan and the Washington Nationals, it's leaving the Japanese league a little thin. Which is why they've decided to implement a new policy in hopes of keeping players from leaving the island . An executive committee representing Japan's 12 professional baseball teams have agreed to introduce a ban on players returning to Japanese baseball after turning down rookie draft nominations in Japan and signing with overseas pro teams.   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

I had a poll going for a while asking you fans this question. The final results of that poll were somewhat surprising; 39% (457) said 'Yes', 47% (667) said 'No', and 5% (56) people were 'Undecided'. I thought more people would have said yes. After having a sub-par 2007 (.296/.388/.493) in ... Hideki Matsui hasn’t seen much action lately. He’s been riding the bench since the first game of Saturday’s double header and is 0 for his last 16.
