World Cafe Live, a Philadelphia nightclub, is being recruited to open a branch at Heritage Square, according to Durham architect Eddie Belk. Belk dropped the club's name during the Durham Planning Commission meeting this evening. He was there to speak in favor of an amendment to the Unified Development Ordinance that would allow nightclubs within 50 feet of a place of worship. "World Cafe Live provides a broad stream of entertainment," Belk said, including "PB&J" afternoon shows for small children. “It’s not what first comes to mind a lot of times when we first think about bars and nightclubs,” he said. Even underfunded, the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area has transformed eyesores to parks and new development since it was created eight years ago this month. The Hilton Garden Inn and Pivot Point Conference Center have risen from bare ground along the Colorado River to serve as a catalyst for further redevelopment of the downtown riverfront, a landfill has become the inviting West Wetlands Park and the 1,418-acre East Wetlands has evolved from a trash-strewn jungle of non-native vegetation into one of the largest and most ambitious restoration projects in the Southwest, said Charles Flynn, executive director. In a mid-point report to the Yuma City Council during its worksession Tuesday evening, Flynn traced the successes of the Heritage Area and the challenges that lie ahead in the area's initial 15-year management period set by Congress in 2000. As part of that legislation, Congress authorized up to $10 million in federal matching funds through 2015 for the project. ...

By Jean Kenny jean.kenny@westprince.com Heritage Registration certificates were presented to the owners of 25 Alberton and area properties last week, marking their historical importance. Carolyn Bertram, minister of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour presented the certificates during a ceremony at the Alberton Museum Heritage Centre, one of the properties being recognized for it historical value. Properties may be registered or designated under the Heritage Places Protection Act as a Heritage place. Nominations for the Register of Heritage Places are reviewed and evaluated by the Heritage Places Advisory Board for a number of criteria including age, architectural style and design, integrity, exterior condition and historical associations. Many of the registrations were the result of a project partnered with the Department of Community, Cultural Affairs and Labour, the Alberton Historical Preservation Foundation and the Federal Historic Places Initiative. Some property owners also submitted applications on their own. “Our province is home to a rich and diversified Heritage, featuring many buildings, structures and sites of historical significance,” said the Minister. She said she was pleased to celebrate with the Alberton and area residents who are identifying, protecting and promoting the value of places that have played a significant role in the development of communities in this area. Nine of the properties recognized for ...
