Taking inspiration from soul greats, Stevie Wonder and Bill Withers, and folk legends, John Prine and Dave Van Ronk, Amos Lee directs his music with a spirit and presence rooted in American tradition. Amos delivers a unique brand of folk-soul music that aims to unite, uplift, and inspire. The "folk" side is reflected in his nimble acoustic guitar playing and the intimacy of his live performances. The "soul" strain comes through in the engaging song-poetry of his lyrics and in what the Philadelphia Inquirer described as his "easygoing voice" and "raw, unedited emotion." ... The action hero chief executive. Senior advisers manipulating affairs of state. Crusading reporters (or bloggers) exposing the truth. Scenes from the last few weeks in American politics or the last few decades of American cinema? With the Republican and Democratic conventions just days away and the congressional and presidential elections two months out from there, the season of red meat politics is upon us. A look at our nation's democracy in action, as seen through the lens of Hollywood, might help put us all in the electoral spirit. Imagine a legislator who takes on an earmark in his own state and challenges a fellow Senator representing rich, corrupt interests back home. It may sound like it could have (or should have) been a modern event. But it was Frank Capra's 1939 film classic Mr. Smith Goes to Washington . Washington was up in arms with the film's cynicism toward 'politics as usual' and depiction of legislators as out of touch with the common man. Gore Vidal's 1964 film The Best Man deals directly with political conventions as it asks the question: Can the best man win with modern politics' penchant for character assassination? Opening August 13 Various theaters By Kimberly Gadette August 13, 2008 Late in his career, Henry Fonda admitted to a group of acting students that he never conquered his personal insecurities, feeling that every performance was his last. It is this rampant insecurity that Ben Stiller and his co-filmmakers address in this utterly zany take on those who serve at the pleasure of the powerbrokers of Hollywood. The opening moments of this action comedy, a movie-about-a-movie, are worth the price of admission alone. Spoofing the Hollywood promotion reel, we are individually introduced to the "actors" involved in making the army adventure film of all time. In quick succession, we meet Brandon T. Jackson's hip-hopping Alpa Chino, Ben Stiller's waning action star Tugg Speedman, Jack Black's farting funnyman Jeff Portnoy, ... ... Find more results for Henry Fonda on RSSMicro.com |
