Shortly after I moved into my gloriously rent-stabilized apartment in 1972 I took a walk down Columbus Avenue, which had the feeling of a Time Warp. Nothing seemed to have changed since about 1947 -- little Mom and Pop grocery stores, coffee shops, hardware stores. The one sign of something new was near 73rd Street, a restaurant called Ruskay's, which had a hand painted menu in the window, by no means a common sight in the culinarily un-awakened New York of that distant time. The menu announced the Chef of the Day at a time when the chefs of even the best restaurants were unknown. People knew that Henri Soule had owned Le Pavillon and his mistress, Henriette Spalter, owned La Cote Basque. Who were the chefs? It didn't seem to matter. They were not the ones who could get you a good table. Ruskay's soon became a hot singles place, so hot you couldn't even walk on the sidewalk on weekend nights. And, as is invariably the case with the hottest spots, it soon went out of business. The hot people have to move on. I was reminded of that walk this morning as I found myself walking down the same street, now full of hip clothing stores, aspiring restaurants featuring the cuisines of many countries and, to my amazement, an art gallery. On the southwest corner of Columbus and 82nd Street, long a shop that sold inexpensive Indian tablecloths and bedspreads, now stands GINA, a handsomely designed gallery devoted to Naive Art. Open auditions for the fall play at Pratt Community College’s, The Learned Ladies, will be 7 p.m. Sept. 2-3 in Carpenter Auditorium. As availability for rehearsal will be part of the casting process, those interested in auditions should bring a schedule of conflicts for the period of Sept. 8 through the show dates of Oct. 23, 24, 25. Rehearsals are scheduled Monday through Thursday evenings; however, they are subject to change due to the availability of cast members. Auditions will be for those 16 and older. During auditions, those interested in acting roles or technical support will be asked to complete an audition form with schedule conflicts and contact information. Then, actors will be given brief scenes and/or monologues from the script to read and practice. Finally, the actors will perform their assigned scenes. A challenging physical comedy written in rhyming couplets, “The Learned Ladies” is a modern adaptation of Moliere’s “Les Femmes Savants” translated and adapted by Freyda Thomas. Thomas captures Moliere’s social satire while placing the emphasis on the dangers of pretension. Clitandre and Henrietta are two young lovers planning to marry who are nearly foiled when Philamente, Henriette’s mother, makes alternate wedding arrangements.
