"No matter how great you think your game is, developers must listen to the community."  Wise words from the Vice President of EA Mythic. Mark Jacobs recently sat down with MTV Mutiplayer and discussed all things MMOs. Jacobs discussed Hellgate: London and why it failed, mainly from the fact that they carried big egos with them into the project from their Diablo days and that they should have focused on the community more than how great they felt the game was. He went on to talk Age of Conan as well. He actually hopes Age of Conan succeeds, though he felt the game should have been delayed until it was a more finished product. I find this slightly ironic as Mythic merely cut content out of their game which was unfinished to make their deadline. What is the scoop with Warhammer, is it more finished and polished than AoC was? The VP continued, "If we don’t succeed with EA behind us, the ‘Warhammer’ IP behind us, with one of the most experienced teams in the industry, that’s not going to be good for the industry. We need to show the world that it’s not just Blizzard who can make a great game, and that the audience is absolutely willing to try new things and to play a game other than ‘WoW.’” This I have to agree with. World of Warcraft is the 800lb gorilla in the room and it can negatively affect other games. Don't get me wrong, if a game isn't quality there is no reason it should compete with WoW for subscribers. But ...

There is a new article on Multiplayer blog with Mythic VP, Mark Jacobs, about his new Warhammer online game. The article also mentions a number of things about Hellgate and why he thinks it failed. In our recent conversation about the state of online games, we also touched on why last year’s “Hellgate: London” went under, and what the troubled “Age of Conan” can do to prevent the same fate. First, we discussed “Hellgate: London,” the online action-RPG was made by Jacobs’ long-time friend Bill Roper. Though Roper had experience as VP of Blizzard North working on the “Diablo” series, his company Flagship Studios recently closed its doors following the release of “Hellgate,” its first title, last October. So what went wrong? “I know for a fact that sometimes just having talent is not enough,” Jacobs said after a long sigh. “You need leadership and you need patience. And what’s most important — something that so many developers forget — is you also need to deflate the ego a little bit. You really have to remember that as good as you were then — ‘Diablo’ was a great game — you’re not always going to be right… I think for ‘Hellgate,’ that was part of the problem.” He also said that no matter how great you think your game is, developers must listen to the community. “It doesn’t mean you have to follow what they say, but you always have to listen,” he said. “The test of greatness is ...

Got iTunes? Like Diablo? Excited about Diablo III ? Enjoy soundtrack music? If you answered yes to at least one of these questions, then you need to head on over to iTunes and download the “Diablo III Overture” from Emmy-winning sound designer Russell Brower and The Eminence Symphony Orchestra. If not only because it is FREE, but because it is highly cool as well. Not only does it sound very epic, has interesting vocals that are a bit creepy and is totally worthy of a really cool sci-fi or fantasy movie, it is just really good music. Plus, it just got me even more excited for the game. If this music is any indication of what the soundtrack to the game is going to be like, then we will hopefully have a game not only full of eye popping graphics and great gameplay but glorious sound as well. Great music and sound always adds to the experience. Oh, did I also mention that it was free? For more on Diablo III, check out some of our previous posts . To add to the experience, listen to 3:46 long track while you read over them. ---Related Articles at Gaming Today:One Free Track Pack and One Pay Track Pack Unveiled for Guitar Hero IIIBlizzard Battle Chests For CheapObvious News of the Day: Diablo III Not the Final Diablo GameFree Dropkick Murphys Track Pack for Guitar Hero IIICan Diablo III Overcome Hellgate: London Downfalls ...

Gamasutra has a nice five page interview up with David DeMartini of EA Partners, the Electronic Arts division that has released games like Rock Band , Crysis , The Orange Box , and, uh, Hellgate: London in the past year. It's a pretty wide ranging chat, from discussions of the challenges the come with working with Japanese studios, to acquiring new titles, to the relative disaster of Hellgate : We're certainly sad with the results for Flagship and what's happened with Hellgate , because at the time we signed it, we were trying to get involved in a very complicated relationship between Namco and Flagship. We were coming late to the party, and trying to do whatever we could to sprinkle the game magic on the project and get it headed in the right direction. I think that's an example where all three parties had the best interest of the game in mind, and sometimes the game doesn't work out. Hellgate is still an incredible concept. The guys who worked on it spent thousands of hours trying to make that concept work, and sometimes we just don't see something. Sometimes, we just didn't take enough time. Sometimes, things don't work out the way you expect. It's kind of like a film with all big stars — on the script, it should be successful, but the movie doesn't turn out as good as everybody hoped. That's why EAP takes a portfolio approach with its games. You have to place a lot of bets, and hope for a lot of hits. Certainly worth a read t ...

Let the Flames Begin... Mythic Vice president and "Warhammer Online" Lead; Mark Jacobs recently spoke to Tracey John about games such as Age of Conan Hyborian Adventures and Hellgate London which was posted at Mtv.com. Jacobs discusses Hellgate London and why he wants to see Age of Conan Hyborian Adventures succeed, but stating he feels the game should have been delayed. With Jacobs having played the game and having read fan postings on both the “Warhammer” and “Age of Conan” forums, he thought that Funcom should have delayed the game. “I think that the greatest mistake that they made was not listening and not learning from what had gone before,” Jacobs said, referring to the launch issues of Funcom’s “ Anarchy Online ” in 2001. “When they looked at ['Age of Conan'] when they were ready to launch, I can’t imagine how they didn’t see the issues that other people saw. According to their annual reports, they had plenty of money. They should’ve looked at it and said, ‘We need to delay this game.’ There are probably reasons I’m not aware of… but I think that’s their biggest sin.” You can read the full story here .
