This just in from the American Psychological Association: "'Post-abortion syndrome ,' post-smashmortion schmyndrome." According to the latest draft of its new report -- a comprehensive analysis of published English-language, peer-reviewed studies on the topic since 1989 -- abortion does not in and of itself pose a Threat to women's mental Health. Specifically: "The most methodologically sound research indicates that among women who have a single, legal, first-trimester abortion of an unplanned pregnancy for nontherapeutic reasons, the relative risks of mental Health problems are no greater than the risks among women who deliver an unplanned pregnancy." ("Nontherapeutic" as in elective; see Page 11 of the draft.) And: The prevalence of mental Health problems observed among those women "was consistent with normative rates of comparable mental Health problems in the general population of women in the United States." (Note: The report draft was the most up-to-date version available at press time. APA associate executive director of communications Kim Mills told Broadsheet that the APA's governing body is expected to vote to accept a final draft later Wednesday morning.) Yes, the report acknowledges, some women may experience grief and sadness, even "clinically significant ... depression and anxiety" following an abortion. Of course some do. But, it notes, "following an" does not equal "caused by." No smoking-gun study found more than corr ...

Hundreds of underground fuel tanks owned by the federal government could be leaking hazardous materials into drinking water, according to an Associated Press investigation. Of particular concern are steel tanks buried in the Cold War era, which are highly likely to have rusted and be leaking. One million gallons of water can be contaminated by just 1 gallon of fuel, posing Health threats to folks who drink it. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has known about the situation since at least the 1990s, but has dragged its feet when it comes to remediation. At present, FEMA knows of at least 150 leaking underground storage tanks -- or LUST, if you prefer -- and "is trying to determine by September whether an additional 124 tanks are underground or above ground and whether they are leaking," according to the AP. sources:  Associated Press , Associated Press ...

Food containers made with common chemical bisphenol A pose no Health Threat, according to a draft assessment by the Food and Drug Administration. More than 100 government- and university-funded studies have linked BPA to cancer, diabetes, behavioral disorders, and reproductive problems, and an April report from the National Toxicology Program declared there was "some concern" about infant exposure to the chemical. But relying largely on two industry-funded studies that say the chemical is just peachy, the FDA found that "an adequate margin of safety exists for BPA at current levels of exposure from food contact uses." Advisers will review the draft report in September. BPA is found all over the damn place, from sunglasses to CDs to car interiors; it rears its head in can linings, baby bottles, and many food containers made of hard, clear plastic #7. Canada and San Francisco have banned BPA in baby products, and California voters are set to vote on a ban soon. sources:  The Washington Post , Associated Press , Bloomberg see also, in Grist:  Nalgene, Wal-Mart back away from BPA straight to the report:  Draft Assessment of Bisphenol A for Use in Food Contact Applications [PDF] ...

State public Health officials say West Nile virus is so widespread among mosquitoes that people should assume it’s everywhere even if it hasn’t shown up in their town. “It’s not unusual for Massachusetts to have human cases of WNV occurring through September,” said Dr. Alfred DeMaria, epidemiologist for the Department of Public Health. “Fortunately, with cooler temperatures, it’s easier to cover up to avoid getting bitten,” he said. “We urge everyone to continue using repellant to avoid mosquito bites.” West Nile virus has been found in mosquitoes in 13 more communities in eastern Massachusetts, including Easton, Stoughton, Whitman and Canton. The virus has already been found in Brockton, Norton and Raynham, as well as several other cities and towns throughout the state. Eastern equine encephalitis, another disease transmitted by mosquito bites, has been found in Berkley and Carver. There have been no human cases of West Nile or EEE in Massachusetts this year. In 2007 there were six human cases of West Nile virus in Massachusetts and no cases of EEE. Between 2004 and 2006, there were 13 cases, with six deaths. ...
