Filed under: Cellphones , Handhelds If you're fortunate enough to have access to a Premier (business, that is) account with AT&T, you're now able to forgo the charade of meandering down to your local store to buy -- or place an order for, more likely -- the iPhone 3G . All three varieties of the best cellphone Apple makes are now available directly through the carrier's B2B online store for the usual $199 / $299 pricing scale; if we had to guess, it's just a matter of time before they'll throw the doors open to the riff raff (read: us), too. We'll drink to that. [Thanks, Vasudev R.] Permalink  |  Email this  |  Comments ...

These are promotional shots for Paris Hilton's new hair extension line DreamCatchers. You can check out the company site here if you absolutely hate your eyes, ears and sense of dignity. In the meantime, I've come up with some slogans to help Paris in her entrepreneurial pursuit: DreamCatchers: Because you've stopped taking your meds and stole your grandmother's purse. Get beautiful! DreamCatchers: Look we gave her some money and figured she'd choke on the extensions during the development process. Who knew? DreamCatchers: Or you can keep looking like a trash bag full of cottage cheese , Kim Kardashian. DreamCatchers: Because you know who gives great hair advice? Chicks with herpes. That's science. In a US congressional hearing today marking NASA's 50th anniversary , which took place yesterday, noted physicist Stephen Hawking seemed to get in a little dig at the Americas, or more specifically, the US. In a pre-recorded message, he asked a question that is often raised with regard to space exploration: "Why should we go into space? What is the justification for spending all of that effort and money in getting a few lumps of Moon rock? Aren't there better causes here on Earth?" "In a way, the situation is like that in Europe before 1492," he continued. "People might have argued it's a waste of money to send Columbus on a wild goose chase. Yet the discovery of the New World made a profound difference to the Old." But instead of mentioning any big technological advance made in the Americas, he followed with: "Just think - we wouldn't have KFC or the Big Mac ." Zing! It's hard to tell exactly how pointed the joke was meant to be, as Hawking uses a computerised voice synthesiser that doesn't convey subtle changes in inflection that could signal a "wink wink, nudge nudge" playfulness or a more sarcastic, deadpan delivery. Still, it struck me as a slightly odd way to support his argument for setting up colonies on the Moon and Mars and, in the next 200 to 500 years, sending people to other star systems. What if we went to all the trouble of building interstellar spaceships only to find a 'Mickey D's' around Alpha Centauri ? Would i ...

The experiment that swallowed the world. Not long after the New York Jets traded for Hall of Fame lock Brett Favre, this popped up on the team's Web site. It's a replica jersey that's $80. (Have no fear! It's available in white, too.) Unfortunately, the higher-quality customizable jerseys can't have his name and number put on them yet -- something about new player rules, licensing, blah, blah, blah. There's no doubt that there will be interest in these jerseys and the higher-end models once available, but I'll stick with my Namath jersey. I guarantee it. ...

Some school and nonprofit fundraisers recently have turned to greener options to generate needed cash. Instead of sending youngsters out into the community to hawk items of questionable greenness like candy, magazines, and virgin-forest wrapping paper, some schools have instead turned to greener wares such as fair-trade coffee, metal water bottles, hand-made soaps, and recycled-content wrapping paper. The trend is not just about having kids sell items their parents might actually want to buy (though that's part of it), it's also aimed at avoiding contradictory messages to impressionable minds. "We're telling the kids about obesity and selling cookie dough," said Lisa Olson, founder of Greenraising, a greener-products fundraising company. "We're telling them about global warming, and they come home with this big catalog of wrapping paper with no recycled content." source:  The Wall Street Journal (access ain't free) ...

Wired has a gallery up of sculptor Michael Rea's science fiction designs made out of wood. He has everything from crazy transports to wacky guns and — as you can see above — a massive and menacing mech designed for the finest mind mankind has ever produced, Stephen Hawking . The suit, titled A Prosthetic Suit For Stephen Hawking with Japanese Steel , is a tribute to Hawking as Rea is a huge fan of the theoretical physicist and has enjoyed his comical appearances on shows such as The Simspons and Futurama . The eight-foot-tall, 300-pound suit isn't simply an inert sculpture, either. There's a hatch located at the rear of the unit for someone to crawl in. The mech's got a huge fist and a rather scary looking gripper , just in case Hawking has to get theoretically physical on some science-hating punks.
