The goal of this study was to determine the frequency and predictors of adverse outcomes among older adults discharged from the ED. DESIGN: Secondary analysis of data from the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey. SUBJECTS: A total of 1851 community-dwelling, Medicare fee-for-service enrollees, >or=65 years old who were discharged from the ED between January 2000 and September 2002. MEASURES: The primary dependent variable was time to first adverse outcome defined as any repeat outpatient ED visit, hospital admission, nursing home admission or death within 90 days of the index ED visit. RESULTS: Six hundred twenty-three of 1851 subjects (32.9%) discharged from the ED experienced an adverse outcome within 90 days of the index visit; 17.2% returned to the ED but were not admitted, 18.3% were hospitalized, 2.6% were admitted to a nursing home, and 4.1% died. The defense rested its case Friday in the trial of a Wichita man charged in the fatal shooting last year of nightclub owner Teresa Hastings. When jurors begin deliberations Monday, they will be asked to consider the testimony of several defense witnesses who said Friday that the defendant did not fire the fatal shot. Donavan Thompson is charged with first-degree murder in Hastings' death and aggravated battery in the wounding of a 26-year-old man. Thompson did not testify. During the first week of the trial, witnesses for the state said a fight broke out at Half-Time Sports Bar at 3120 E. And here, local Democrats are planning fund-raisers, speeches and parties that will coincide with the convention. “We want to throw a celebration,” said Brian Ahern. “We want to do what Democrats do best — party.” And so, on the evening of Aug. 28, San Miguel Democrats are planning a three-hour party at Las Montañas to drink and dance, listen to jazz and watch the marquee speech of next week’s convention.
