Might the U.S. Justice Department blow a hole in Switzerland’s centuries-old banking-secrecy rules? Apparently it’s trying. In an unprecedented move against a foreign bank, the DOJ is seeking to force UBS AG to turn over the names of wealthy U.S. clients who allegedly used the giant Swiss bank to avoid taxes. Here are stories from [...] ...

MSNBC exec-in-charge Phil Griffin will be a guest on Tammy Haddad's National Journal Radio show on XM's POTUS Channel this afternoon. The two former Hardball executive producers will discuss the life and legacy of NBC's Tim Russert. Meanwhile, in a piece for Newsweek, Haddad identifies the three miracles of Tim Russert. Russert, a devout Catholic, had an audience with Pope Benedict just days before his sudden death. MSNBC's Colleen King took this picture Wednesday outside the Kennedy Center as the memorial service for Tim Russert was ending.New Career Opportunities Daily: The best jobs in media ...

The Huffington Post's Danny Shea reports MSNBC pulled a promo for Hardball with Chris Matthews today featuring a tease relating to Michelle Obama's "political image makeover." The ad featured female silhouettes with words like "Her New Outlook?" appearing on the screen. A statement from MSNBC said, "The artwork should not have been used, it was inappropriate. We pulled the spot this morning and it was re-done without those images." A representative told HuffPost the ad played "once or twice" — it was at least twice, as a longer version aired during Countdown last night. Ah, Baron. In a move that falls somewhere between tragically predictable and predictably tragic, Baron Davis has opted out. I’m shocked, frankly, and my guesses on this front were all wrong. A few years ago at a legal conference in Miami I heard a U.S. Assistant Attorney General state that, as a matter of internal policy, the United States Department of Justice considered any American engaged in offshore financial activity as suspect of tax evasion or other wrongdoing. The U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has loudly and repeatedly adopted this perverse theory as their own. The IRS regularly issues scaremonger press releases citing offshore bank accounts, trusts and investing as part of a phony "Dirty Dozen" list of alleged tax frauds. (When pressed, the IRS admits that offshore financial activity for Americans is fully legal, as long as you report). The latest example of this "guilty-until-you-prove-you're-innocent" approach came in Miami U.S. District Court yesterday. In an unprecedented move against a foreign bank, the Department of Justice is seeking a broad "John Doe subpoena" to force UBS AG, the major Swiss bank, to turn over ostensibly all the names of thousands of wealthy U.S. clients. The IRS says it is looking for those who allegedly used the giant Swiss bank to avoid U.S. taxes. Easier Ways This dramatic, publicity seeking IRS ploy ignores the fact that the Swiss-American Tax Treaty has more than sufficient procedures to obtain just such information. But that wouldn't make big headlines for the IRS. It has been reported that UBS officials suggested the possibility that the U.S. could obtain the names thr ...
