Thomas Rodgers lives in Hannibal, but the 11-year-old is becoming an “old hand” at dealing with California earthquakes. When a major earthquake hit California on July 29, with a 5.4 magnitude, Thomas was not “shaken” - except for the movement of the building at LAX airport in which he was standing. Thomas and his sister, Richy Lynn Rodgers, 10, had been with their dad, Tom Rodgers, at his home in Bakersfield, Calif., and were preparing to come home to Hannibal. They were already inside the airport when the earthquake hit, Thomas said. “We were getting ready to fly home. “We felt the earthquake, and everybody started calling everyone. It was a 5.4.” Their dad was with them, Thomas explained. “My bags started shaking. It lasted five seconds. I knew what it was. “They are pretty common,” he explained. “The usual ones are small, but that was bigger than usual.” He said although the floor moved, no one panicked, adding, “I think most were from there.” Unlike her brother, Richy Lynn did not know it was an earthquake. “I thought I was just dizzy or something,” she explained. “Then I heard the people in front of us say, ‘Do you feel the earthquake?’ “I never was in an earthquake before,” she said. “It felt like you were dizzy.” It did not delay their flight home to St. Louis, Thomas said. In fact, when they landed in St. Louis, “we were early.” Thomas later learned the airport had been damaged. He added that this was not the only earthqua ...

Larry D. Abbey, 25, of Hannibal, was arrested at gunpoint by the Hannibal Police Department on Friday, Aug. 8, after the police were called to a domestic disturbance at a local home. Capt. James Hark of the HPD provided the following report: The police were called to a home in the 2300 block of Hope Street, where a male was allegedly assaulting a female. When the police arrived they located a male suspect in the back yard of the residence. Abbey was known to officers as having an active felony warrant stemming from incidents of discharging a firearm at several locations in the area.  Officers over the past weeks had been actively seeking Abbey for the felony warrant as the danger to the community, because discharging the firearm was a great concern. Police also wanted to ensure that while Abbey was evading police efforts to arrest him on the warrant further acts would not lead to injury to residents of the neighborhood. Abbey was taken into custody at gunpoint and transported to the Marion County Jail. During Friday evening’s incident Abbey allegedly assaulted a female and threatened her with a knife. Another family member in the household intervened and secured the knife as Abbey fled from the residence. On Monday, Aug. 11, Abbey remained in the Marion County Jail on charges of assault (felony) and unlawful use of a weapon (felony), in addition to the felony warrant for two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, with bond set at $1 ...

A highway bypass of Hannibal has lots of support, but not a penny for construction. Funding will be a topic again Wednesday when the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission meets in Canton. The bypass part of the public meeting gets underway at 10:15 a.m. at Alexander Campbell Auditorium on the campus of Culver-Stockton College. The proposed four-lane road would stretch about 10 miles from the U.S. 24-36 interchange west of Hannibal to U.S. 61 south of the city. Survey work on a possible route will be done this winter. Estimated cost is $40 million to $60 million, but construction money is not in place. Still, the Missouri Department of Transportation considers the bypass a priority. Tom Boland, a former commission chairman who will introduce bypass speakers Wednesday, said Missouri can provide some of the funding, but that the bulk will likely have to come from the federal government. “It’s got to be serious bucks,” Boland said. MoDOT projects the current funding formula will barely provide enough for maintenance in the next 20 years, let alone new projects. That will leave Missouri with an estimated transportation shortfall of more than $18 billion. Duane Michie, the commission’s current chairman, called the bypass “an important project” that will add to the recently-completed Avenue of the Saints four-lane designation between St. Paul and St. Louis. Michie said funding is a “critical issue” that must be addressed so tha ...

Roger W. Bowen, 49, of Hannibal, was taken by ambulance to Hannibal Regional Hospital for treatment of injuries he suffered in a one-car accident at approximately 1 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, on state Highway 79 near Jefferson Street in Hannibal. The Hannibal Police Department reported when officers were called to the accident, they discovered a silver colored Chevrolet Monte Carlo on its side next to some trees on the west side of the roadway. The police said apparently the vehicle was traveling south on 79 when it left the west side of the roadway, hit several small trees and stopped on its left side. The driver, Bowen, was trapped inside the vehicle but was conscious and responding to officers. The Hannibal Fire Department used its extrication equipment in helping to remove Bowen from the car. According to the police, Bowen was ticketed for reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. ...

With good team speed and a team-first approach, the Hannibal Warriors hope to contend this fall in Section III Class C West varsity football action. Hannibal, which did not have JV football last year, went 2-7 overall. Many younger players were able to get varsity experience, and that should help the Warriors this year. Also, JV football returns this year, which will give more players a chance to get on the field and help prepare the program for the future, varsity coach John Manion said. “I’m pretty happy with our speed at the skill positions. Team speed is a plus for us,” Manion said. It starts at the quarterback position, where senior Tyler Baker returns for his second year as the starter. “He’s a good leader and is having a good preseason so far,” Manion said. Baker will be backed up by junior Josh Greco and David Miller. A big boost will be the return of senior running back Jared Cuyler. “He was hurt all last year with a stress fracture,” Manion said. “He’s in great shape. He’s stronger and faster, and we’re really happy with him.” Junior Zach Bukolt also returns at running back, and has impressed in camp, the coach said. Senior Joe Lewis returns to take over as the starting fullback. Anchoring the offensive line will be returning juniors Steve Kimpland and Dustyn Kidd. They started as sophomores last year, Manion said. Senior Wade Chrisman, who started most of last year, is back at center. Also fighting for starting spots a ...

Dr. Michael Bukstein is humbled by a national recognition. But it’s the smiles of patients whose lives he has touched that make the job gratifying. Bukstein is chief executive officer of the Hannibal Clinic and board president of the Northeast Missouri Ambulatory Surgery Center. He will be among a select group of doctors from around the nation recognized for leadership at ambulatory surgery centers in the September/October issue of Becker’s ASC Review. The bimonthly publication reaches an audience of more than 25,000 medical and business professionals. Surgery center staff honored Bukstein with a luncheon Thursday. “It was a surprise to me,” Bukstein said between operations Thursday morning. “A patient said ‘Congratulations’ to me and I didn’t know what she was talking about. This is a nice national recognition.” Bukstein has been a surgeon in Hannibal for 33 years. He briefly considered specializing in plastic surgery, but soon turned his focus to helping cancer patients. “I decided I just didn’t want to deal with the cosmetics,” he said. “I realized cancer patients are the patients you help the most. You extend their life and rid them of a lot of misery. If I can have an impact, that would be my choice.” Surgery centers are a growing alternative to traditional acute-care hospitals, and Bukstein is proud to be part of what he calls an “overwhelming success” at the Hannibal facility. The surgery center and clinic have 50 board-ce ...

Fishermen and recreational boaters are having to purchase fuel for their craft somewhere other than the Hannibal marina. The marina’s gas dock was a casualty of this summer’s flood. Chris Atkinson, director of the Hannibal Parks and Recreation Department, does not expect to be able to offer fuel service to boaters anytime soon. “We sent a letter out to all the individuals who rented slips from us to give them an update on what the (repair) process is. It said it’s very unlikely that we’ll have the gas dock replaced by the end of this 2008 boating season,” he said. The gas dock now sits in Nipper Park. “The electrical work and the gas pipes have all been disconnected,” said Atkinson. The loss of the gas dock has had a financial impact on the parks department. “Obviously gas sales are our major source of income during the summer down there at the marina,” said Atkinson. “On average a year we sell between $12,000 and $15,000 worth of gas so we’ve probably lost $3,000, $4,000, $5,000 worth of revenue from selling gas.” Atkinson knows that the inability to fuel up their boats at the marina is a hindrance to boaters. “It’s kind of been a big inconvenience for the boaters who rented slips from us or who come in as transients because they don’t have gas readily available right there,” he said. “People are going to have to take their boats out on trailers (to purchase fuel) or bring down their own gas.” Boat traffic at the Hannibal marina ...
