Hanley Ramirez for the second consecutive year was awarded the Marlins MVP  by the baseball writers . Shortstop Hanley Ramirez missed a fourth straight start Sunday but still had something to celebrate. He received his second consecutive Marlins Most Valuable Player award, given out by the South Florida chapter of the Baseball Writers Association if America. "A lot of people on this team deserved that award,'' he said. And apparently some of his teammates agree. Several players privately grumbled that they thought Jorge Cantu was the team's most valuable player. Cantu went into Sunday batting .279 with 29 home runs and 93 RBI. Manager Fredi Gonzalez has said he thinks Cantu has been Florida's most consistent player. I'm sympathetic to those you who thought that the award should have gone to Cantu.  Of course, one could also make a case for Ricky Nolasco even though he only plays every fifth day. But not being a member of the South Florida chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America, I didn't get to vote. Nonetheless, Hanley is a very deserving recipient.  It may have not been his best year but the Marlins rarely produce 30-30 guys.  In fact, Hanley was only the second one in the history of the franchise. In other  award news : Three other Marlins were honored by the South Florida writers:  Chris Volstad  (Rookie),  Luis Gonzalez   (Charlie Hough Good Guy) and  Alfredo Amezaga  ( Jeff Conine  Mr. Marlin).  The inaugural ...

Hanley Ramirez, as of last night, is still nursing  his sore shoulder . Hanley Ramirez doesn't believe his shoulder injury is serious, but he said he might not be able to play Friday when the Marlins open an important series against the Philadelphia Phillies. ''It's hard, but I'm not going to rush myself,'' Ramirez said. --- Ramirez winced in pain as he pulled on an undershirt while speaking to reporters, and he said it bothers him at the plate. I'm guessing he won't start again tonight, and there is no need to rush him.  The magic is either going to happen or it won't where the playoffs are concerned.   And there is no reason to mess with the shoulder he had surgically repaired during the offseason. When he is feeling up to it, he will return.  In the meantime, Alfredo plays a mean defensive short stop and it is interesting seeing Maybin adjusting to JRS in the outfield.  Not to mention the two of them are doing pretty good at the plate.  And by pretty good, I mean really good the last two nights.   ...

Hanley Ramirez Objectively Top 5 MVP Candidate I realize that's not much of a bold statement, but by using WPA to measure offensive production and zone ratings plus a position adjustment for defense, Hanley's in a pack between 4th and 6th with Chipper Jones and Matt Holliday. What's impressive about Hanley's 2008 season is that the zone ratings show him as an average shortstop in the field. As Marlins' fans, have you noticed an improvement? Is he making fewer throwing mistakes or just tracking down more balls? On the negative side, Mike Jacobs rates as below replacement level even though he has an .814 OPS -- evidently he just can't play defense. You guys agree? Oh, and Dan Uggla comes in at #12 and Cody Ross comes in at #14 overall in the NL. ...

There is some concern about Hanley Ramirez's future contract is causing  some complacency . All-Star  Hanley Ramirez  -- who leads NL shortstops with 20 errors and is hitting 36 points lower than last year's .332, and .216 with runners in scoring position -- insists his six-year, $70 million contract won't make him complacent. But one Marlins executive wants to see for himself. Marlins special assistant  Andre Dawson  said ''work ethic and hunger are telltale signs'' if a good player wants to improve. Does Ramirez have that? ''It remains to be seen, especially now that he's locked up,'' Dawson said. ``I'd like to see a bit more hunger. That's what makes you a team leader. His intensity is yet to reach that peak. And I want to see him cut his swing down in RBI situations. He's over-swinging.'' Considering that Hanley's OBP has increased this year over last season's and his home runs are on a higher pace than 2007, I don't think there is much cause for concern that he has lost his hunger. If the season ended last night, Hanley would have a better average and OPS than he did in 2006.  Also he already has more RBI and HR. It is true that Hanley's BA has dropped with RISP but his OPS with RISP has increased over last season. Sure, he is probably over-swinging at times, and that can be corrected.  But Hanley is far from unproductive with runners on second and/or third. Much more to say, but I'm out of time.     ...

Hanley Ramirez injured himself diving for a Miguel Tejada grounder last night and is considered  day-to-day . Hanley Ramirez hit two home runs Wednesday night in Florida's 14-2 victory against the Houston Astros, as the Marlins won their seventh straight to match a season high. But he left the game in the fifth inning with a left shoulder strain after diving for a grounder. Ramirez, who had arthoscopic surgery on the same shoulder in October, said he hopes to return today or Friday at the latest. "Hopefully not even one game," Ramirez said when asked if he might miss any action. "I'm going to be day to day, hour to hour. We'll see how I feel tomorrow when I come to the back." When he does return, the Marlins can only hope he's at full strength. "We'll see," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "Everybody is a little banged up this time of year but there's nothing serious. If we have to give him a day to get him better we'll give him a day." Hopefully it is nothing and maybe it is, but Hanley has history of shoulder problems and the hurting shoulder bothered him in his final at bat. If the Marlins do the drastic and maybe intelligent move of shutting Hanley down for the rest of regular season, they still can make an historic run at the playoffs.  However, it will make it that much more difficult.   With Hanley out of the lineup, the defense will actually improve with Alfredo at short.  But as much as I like Alfredo, there is no way he can ...
