This weekend offers an opportunity for a little upper-body workout scraping and painting a front porch in Bay View, and at least a couple better recreational alternatives. For the easy riders, the Friends of the Hank Aaron State Trail and other groups working to improve the lakefront amenities have organized a ride from the Menomonee Valley to Lakeshore State Park. The starting point is the chimney park near S. 35th and Canal Sts. and the end point is the festival celebrating the island park's one year anniversary. The pedaling begins at 10: 30 a.m. For a slightly less-virtuous exploration of the city's landmarks, Phil Van Valkenberg is gathering the forces for his 24th Annual Fat Tire Tour of Milwaukee. Much of the history and details of that ride are unspeakable, but the time and location can be shared: 10 a.m. at the Safe House. On the competitive side, the roadies get a chance to shine under the lights in the Giro d' Grafton criterium on Saturday and under the sun in Sheboygan on Sunday. The juniors will take the start line in Grafton at noon and the pro 1/2s take the prime time at 7:30 p.m. The ISCorp team pulled together the race and festival. On April 8th, 1974, Hank Aaron accomplished the greatest feat in professional sports history. By hitting his 715th home run, "The Hammer" broke Babe Ruth's  career home run record. The homer was really no more amazing then the 714 that had come before it: a ball hurled by Dodgers' pitcher Al Downing twisted over the plate, and Aaron sent it on an arc that cleared both the outfield wall and the leaping Bill Buckner, who almost tumbled over the wall himself trying to stab it.   The eruption was immediate and explosive. Fans stood and cheered wildly. Two of them entered the field to run with their new king. Even Henry's mother, the proud woman who had watched the hate and vitriol of so many racists beat down her beloved son for so many years, jumped onto the field to witness her son's greatest moment up close. I have been playing a historical league that I started in 1946. I let the computer do everything while I check the results. This is how I play DMB and most computer sports games I have. I don't have the time to micro manage these games as I spend too much of my free time playing World of Warcraft:rolleyes:. Anyway I noticed that Hank Aaron has been playin for the Cardinals since 1960 and the computer put him at second base! What the heck? To be fair he was playing right field until the end of the current season but still!! He also only has 365 homeruns for his career which started in 1953!! He started with Milwaukee in 1953 and was traded to St. Louis in 1959. He has been injured a few seasons but still this is too far off reality to please this baseball historian. I hope that the AI in version 9 is better than this. I also looked at how Sandy Koufax did and OMG!! He played about 7 years and had 55 wins before suffering a career ending injury. Again the historical computer AI is found wanting. Yes I know Koufax did retire early in 1966 but he had many effective years. This is why I favor Diamond Mind Baseball over this truly wonderful game. This game is awesome for the fictional universe, but when it comes to histrical replays it ain't even close. I wish we could get DMB like results with the OOTP manager:) ...
