Ron Haruni submits: The latest market data from the independent research and consulting firm Strategy Analytics shows mobile phone shipments in the United States reached 41.9 million units during Q2′08, up 5.3% from 39.8 million in Q2′07. Some industry observers expected shipments to drop on economic fears and a tightening on consumer spending. However, it seems that consumers have shown complete indifference toward negative economic headlines which unfortunately continue rolling in, in a systematic way. By purchasing replacement phones at an optimistic rate, consumers have shown a clear perspective in relation to this particular market. Complete Story » ...

U.S. mobile phone shipments increased five percent in the second quarter, compared to the same period a year ago to reach 42 million units, according to a report by Strategy Analytics released today . Despite the negative reports on Motorola ( NYSE: MOT ), the company had a strong quarter, and was able to retain its No. 1 position in the U.S., by recording a 25.8 percent market share. Other findings: -- Motorola: In the second quarter, Motorola's revenues beat estimates, and it managed to ship more phones than it thought it would. Strategy Analytics claimed that in the U.S. that was because Motorola had solid relationships with both CDMA and GSM carriers. However, in its worldwide report it released last month, it said Motorola sold 28.1 million handsets, down from 35.5 million a year ago, and that its marketshare was 9.5 percent, down from 13.7 percent a year ago. -- LG: The Handset maker secured the No. 2 position in the U.S. for the first time in almost 2 years, due partly to Sales of 3G devices with AT&T. -- RIM: Blackberry achieved a double-digit marketshare in the U.S. for the first time, based on the success of its balanced portfolio of consumer and enterprise handsets. Ailing Handset giant, Motorola Inc., could be on the road to recovery analysts suggested yesterday after the company reported an unexpected second-quarter profit. Motorola generated a net income of $4 million (less than a penny per share) in the second quarter, compared to a loss of $28 million ($0.01/share) a year earlier. Revenue, meanwhile, declined 7.4% to $8.08 billion, but beat average estimates of $7.72 billion. Under the leadership of new CEO, Greg Brown, Motorola was able to boost income from its two-way radio and set-top box businesses more than enough to compensate for the widening losses of its Handset division. The company has also been working to cut costs amid the ongoing decline of the phone business, laying off more than 9,000 employees over the past 18 months. Motorola sold a total of 28.1 million mobile phones in the second quarter, down 21% from last year, but still more than most analysts had predicted. “It’s starting to stabilize,” said RBC Capital Markets analyst, Mark Sue, of the Handset business, which Motorola plans to spin off as a separate company next year. ...
