Filed under: Cellphones If you thought Velocity Mobile just rolled over and died after showing off a few handsets at CTIA earlier this year, you'd be exactly wrong. The outfit's Windows Mobile-powered 103 has just surfaced in the FCC's lair, giving us a smidgen of hope that a US release is but moments / weeks / months away. Unfortunately, this filing doesn't spill the beans on any other specifications, but the 67 page User Manual does dive into great detail on changing the battery, inserting microSD cards and navigating around within the operating system. C'mon Inventec, give us the good stuff. Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Comments ...

Filed under: Samsung By blanketing every corner of virtually every carrier in the American market, Samsung's mobile division has now laid claim to the rather lofty mark of 150 million handsets sold in the US market since it first set up shop this side of the pond eleven years ago. Though glitzy, marketing-heavy efforts like the Instinct , Glyde , and BlackJack series get the better part of the spotlight, Samsung likely owes almost all of its success to its stunning effectiveness in getting series after series of carrier-customized, low-cost flips into customers' hands at a blistering pace -- a pace that has left competitiors like Motorola just a little shellshocked. A company rep is boasting that they'll push another 30 million in total this year, so no rush getting down to the store; if you want a Sammy, odds are they'll have what you're looking for. Although that Nokia sits fearlessly at the top of the mobile phone industry, they certainly want to keep up to date to latest trends when it comes to cell phones and smartphones. Currently what Nokia really lacks is a touchscreen Handset. We’ve all witnessed Apple’s success at selling their second generation iPhone. Despite it’s their second cell phone, they managed to sell 1 million units in the first weekend. That’s incomparable to the million phones Nokia sells every quarter but still it points out a fact. Toucscreens are popular. Smartphones with touchscreens are popular . Samsung has the Instinct and the Omnia, HTC has a few Touch devices. Even RIM is working on their first one. So Nokia simply has to follow. Although there’s no name for the future Nokia touchscreen Handset, it’s rumored that it will hit the market by the end of the year. It’s also said this first device will be an entry level to mid-range smartphone designated to the masses. Surely they will be developing iPhone like smartphones in the near future, but in the mean time I’d like to test out their first touchscreen phone. In May, rumors spread that Vodafone ( NYSE: VOD ) and AT&T ( NYSE: T ) may be interested in buying a stake in Huawei Technologies' Handset division for up to $2 billion. The logic was that the move by AT&T and Vodafone was defensive—Handset makers like Nokia ( NYSE: NOK ) were starting to get into the services business, so why not let the carriers get into the Handset business? However, that doesn't seem to be panning out with the more likely buyers being private equity firms. For now, the front runners are Silver Lake and Providence Equity Partners, Reuters reports . Sources say another possible buyer may be a consortium consisting of AEA Investors and General Atlantic. Huawei is likely looking for a U.S. partner to buy the majority stake because it's been no secret that it's wanted to expand here.  Related Vodafone And AT&T Are Named As Possible Buyers Of Huawei Handset Stake ...
