Now that it's official that Apple will be holding a special "Let's Rock" media event in San Francisco on Tuesday let's take a look under the curtain to see what announcements may be in store from Cupertino. It's pretty apparent that new iPods are in the offing, mostly because the invitation clearly shows and iPod display (not to mention the campy "Let's Rock" theme) and because new iPods have been announced at the last two three years' September events. Let's recap: At the September 2007 event Apple announced: iPod touch iPod nano 3G iPod classic 80, 160GB iPhone price drop $599 to $399 iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store Apple and Starbucks Music partnership At the September 2006 event Apple announced: iTunes... ...

While synthetic tracks remain a work in progress in Thoroughbred racing, Keeneland has developed an innovative new database to help its handicappers get a better grasp of its Polytrack surface. A Handicapping tool, dubbed PolyCapping, will be unveiled this week when the track launches its redesigned Web site in advance of the start of its fall meet, which begins on Oct. 3. The new database, which is free to access, will allow horseplayers to search for a wide range of information on winners of Keeneland races since Oct. 2006, including positions at key junctures of the race, last start, workout information, track maintenance and temperature. "The concept behind this was everyone had their theory on what was important," said Julie Balog, digital marketing manager for Keeneland. "Rather than bundle it all together and tell them, 'This is what we think you want,' we're going to let them choose what they think is important." ...

While most of the filmgoing world probably wouldn't have minded seeing Kate Winslet compete against herself for a Best Actress Oscar next February (at this point we'd do anything to improve her odds), we'd sacrifice that opportunity if it means we get to witness and/or feel the seismic power struggle rocking Winslet's war-crime period piece The Reader . It was about a month ago that Harvey Weinstein cited positive test screenings and a Winslet Oscar push while moving the film's release date up to 2008; alas, as we anticipated, co-producer Scott Rudin probably heard the news right around the same time we did. The resulting squabble can be seen from outer space, but thankfully we've wrangled a closer vantage point than that. We handicap the bloody duel and predict our winner after the jump. HISTORY : Rudin and Weinstein last clashed when Paramount sold Miramax the international rights to The Hours , also helmed by Reader director Stephen Daldry. Everything was fair game to Harvey — Nicole Kidman's prosthetic nose, Philip Glass's score, final cut — and the drama is generally blamed for costing The Hours its Venice Film Festival premiere. But it worked: Kidman won, Glass was nominated, and the $25 million film did more than $108 milion worldwide. EDGE : Even. PRAGMATICS : Whatever version of The Reader test audiences saw last month in New York wasn't the final cut; we hear it's still at least a month away, which plunks cash-strapped ...

by Ryan Wilson Filed under: Golf , PGA , Ryder Cup The Ryder Cup starts Friday, which is another way of saying the Europeans are just three days from Operation Beatdown '08. It's hardly surprising that our friends across the pond are favored -- they've won the last three events, and the only reason it's not six straight is because Justin Leonard holed a "no way that goes in" 40-footer in 1999. But, hey, there's a reason they play these things: anything can happen. As a companion piece to Shane Bacon's look at the American side , here's my ill-informed take on the European team, their past record, and who I think they will be best paired with this week. Sergio Garcia (14-4-2) and Oliver Wilson (rookie) -- America hates Ryder Cup Garcia for a reason : because he never loses (or at least it seems that way). He's played with Jesper Parnevik, Jose Maria Olazabal and Lee Westwood during the last four events and he's won 70% of the time. Not too shabby. I'll be honest: I have no idea who Oliver Wilson is. For all I know, we're related. Whatever, he'll just have to stay out of Garcia's way on Friday and Saturday and hope the Euros are far enough ahead on Sunday that it won't matter if he goes down 9 and 8.   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

The Bush administration wants to shield its $700 billion bailout plan from the scrutiny of a court. Good luck with that. "Courts don't like Congress to say you don't have the power to review what we are doing. Courts have a big allergy to that," Linda Greenhouse, who covered the Supreme Court for three decades for the New York Times , told an audience at the New School on Tuesday night. "So I could see a challenge, and it could be a challenge from both sides of the court." The discussion was led by Bob Kerrey, the president of the New School and onetime presidential candidate, and the conversation turned to how the court might change under a new administration. Senator Barack Obama has not said a word about his philosophy on judicial appointments, while Senator John McCain has said that he will not appoint justices who "legislate" from the bench --- code for his allegiance to the Federalist Society, a group determined to make sure that only "strict constructionists" of the Constitution make it onto the federal bench. Kerrey was worried about what would happen if two Samuel Alitos were appointed to the court by the next president. Justices David Souter and John Paul Stevens are predicted to retire soon after the next president is sworn into office. "Even if you get one," Greenhouse noted, the balance will tip. "These things are hanging by a thread." And sometimes, not even. For instance, Alito recused himself from hearing the appe ...
