Things have been quiet on the Palestinian end lately, thanks to Ramadan. The Muslim holy month of fasting usually means shorter days, lower energy levels, lots of cheap plastic lanterns and a host of nightly social obligations. As a result, most serious  business  simply gets pushed until after the Eid al Fitr celebration. The Eid started Tuesday, and many are predicting that events will begin to ramp up on the Palestinian end soon after. But just what direction those events will go depends on whom you ask. Egypt plans to resume its on-and-off efforts to bring the feuding Palestinian factions together. A delegation from the Islamic group Hamas, which defeated its rival Fatah faction in January 2006 parliamentary elections, will travel to Cairo on Oct. 8 for talks expected to continue through the month. Hamas and Fatah coexisted for several months in a unity government that collapsed last summer, leaving Hamas running a pariah ministate in the Gaza Strip and Fatah controlling the West Bank and Palestinian Authority with U.S. and Israeli backing. Since then, the prospect of reconciliation has been stalled around a central point: Fatah has refused to sit down with Hamas until it cedes control of Gaza and issues an apology for the July 2007 military rout, which Fatah considers an illegal coup. But senior Fatah Officials have recently indicated a softening of that stance. "We are not asking anybody to go back to where we were," senior ...

The FBI took a new slap at the Council on American-Islamic Relations today at the Holy Land Foundation terrorism financing trial. FBI Special Agent Lara Burns was going over more transcripts from the Philadelphia meeting -- the 1993 gathering of Holy Land Officials and Hamas sympathizers that the government contends was meant to brainstorm ways to downplay the Foundation's extremist ties -- when talk turned to a passage from defendant Shukri Abu Baker. He is quoted on the wiretap transcript talking about how it would be beneficial to have more traditional, secular American organizations to help spread the Islamist message. He and others envisioned an "alternative" organization "which can benefit from a new atmosphere, one whose Islamic hue is not very conspicuous," he said according to the transcript. Prosecutor Barry Jonas asked Burns whether any groups formed after the Philadelphia gathering fit this mold. "CAIR," she said. --Jason Trahan ...

WASHINGTON — Top American counterterrorism Officials today said Al Qaeda is "imploding" and that its violent tactics have turned Muslims worldwide against the organization. "Absolutely it's imploding. It's imploding because it's not a message that resonates with a lot of Muslims," the State Department's coordinator for counterterrorism, Dell Dailey, said. Al Qaeda still remains the most dangerous threat to America. But of growing concern are organizations like Lebanese Hezbollah and Hamas... ...

DALLAS - From donations urging violence to advertisements and videos lauding one of the fathers of global jihad, evidence in the Hamas-support trial against former Officials at the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF) Thursday took a decidedly bloody tone. The five defendants are accused of illegally funneling $12 million to Hamas through a series of charities, or zakat committees in the West Bank and Gaza. FBI agent Lara Burns has been on the witness stand all week, presenting evidence establishing the group's stated and passionate support for Hamas. A mistrial was declared last October after jurors could not reach unanimous verdicts on most counts. Defendant Mohamed El-Mezain was acquitted on all counts against him with the exception of a conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists. This time, added care seems to be taken to identify all the players and define their connections to the case. In addition, some of the exhibits were not entered into evidence last year. Defense attorneys argue the men merely sought to alleviate suffering by needy Palestinians living under occupation. The images displayed Thursday rarely invoked those needy people, but focused instead on the need to attack. Several exhibits showing HLF's invocation Abdullah Azzam , an iconic Palestinian jihadist, are among the new evidence presented by the government. Azzam moved to Pakistan after the Russian invasion of Afghanistan to set up the ...
