BEIT LAHIYA, Gaza Strip — Mideast envoy Tony Blair on Tuesday called off what would have been the first visit of a top Western diplomat to Hamas-ruled Gaza, after Israel's Shin Bet security service said he might come under attack there. The Shin Bet security service said it had received "pinpoint information that Palestinians were planning to attack Blair in Gaza, so the relevant services alerted him to the fact." Blair told The Associated Press that the threat was "specific" and "credible," forcing him to call off the trip but he said it was a postponement, not a cancellation. "I intend to go to Gaza as soon as I can, and I will continue to press for help for the people there," he said. Blair's visit Tuesday was to have included a tour of a Gaza waste water project and meetings with traders and U.N. officials, but not with Leaders of Hamas, the Islamic militant group that seized Gaza by force more than a year ago. Hamas made security arrangements for Blair, setting up checkpoints in areas he was expected to tour, banning cars from using roads and lining streets with black-clad policemen carrying AK-47s. Since the Hamas takeover, Gaza has been virtually sealed off from the world by Israel and Egypt, a policy that has received tacit international backing. Blair has said in recent weeks that a new policy toward Gaza needs to be developed, pointing to the growing suffering of Gaza's people, but has not offered a plan. The options ar ... Hamas is caught in an unresolved tug-of-war between pragmatic Gaza politicians intent on winning elections and paramilitary Leaders and refugees who are steadfast on the vow of relentless jihad, British political scientist Gunning argues. The winner could determine whether Israel and the United States will ever allow a full-fledged Palestinian state. - Sreeram Chaulia (Jul 18, '08) ... Source: clipmarks.com --- 7 days ago

Clip Source: www.theaustralian.news.com.au Hamas to raise price for Shalit Hamas has pledged to heed lessons from Israel's prisoner swap with Hezbollah by demanding a higher price for captured soldier Gilad Shalit, held in the Gaza Strip. The militant regime, which rules Gaza, has said Israel had shown it was no longer able to dictate terms during negotiations, and immediately moved to set its own terms on protracted talks about Shalit's release. Israeli officials have spent days trying to downplay the aftermath of the swap, in which many commentators on both sides of the Lebanese border have claimed Israeli Leaders did poorly. Hamas negotiators in Gaza, meanwhile, were demanding that the same German negotiator who brokered the Hezbollah-Israel deal also play a role in floundering talks about a trade for Shalit. ... Remarks of Senator Barack Obama Press Avail Sderot, Israel July 23, 2008 As prepared Today, I’ve had the honor of visiting with the brave citizens of Sderot. For seven years, they have endured constant threats to their security, and demonstrated uncommon courage simply by carrying on with their daily lives. I am here as an American – and as a friend of Israel – to say that we stand with the people of Sderot, and with all of the people of Israel. The Qassam rockets fired by Hamas deliberately and indiscriminately target civilians. This terror is intolerable. Israelis should not have to be endangered in their homes and schools. I am hopeful that the recent understanding to end the attacks will provide some relief. But America must always stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself against those who threaten its people. To achieve true security, I am deeply committed to helping Israel achieve a lasting peace with Palestinians who are prepared to accept the State of Israel, renounce violence and terrorism, and abide by agreements. Israelis desire a secure peace in which both they and the Palestinians can fulfill their legitimate aspirations – a strong, secure state of Israel living alongside a viable, peaceful Palestinian state. We must support Palestinian Leaders who share this vision, including the Leaders I met with in Ramallah today. The threats to Israel’s security begin in Sderot, but they don’t end here. They include outrageo ... Source: www.earthtimes.org --- 19 days ago
