Israel has ordered the Gaza Strip's border crossings closed after militants violated a cease-fire by launching two rockets. Israel has increased the trickle of humanitarian aid going into Gaza since a cease-fire took hold with Gaza's Hamas rulers in June. But Tuesday's order by Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak follows a policy of closing the crossings briefly in response to each truce violation by militants. The Israeli military says Gaza Gunmen launched two rockets Monday evening, causing no damage or casualties. The military says Monday's fire brought to 46 the number of rockets launched by militants since the truce began. No militant group claimed responsibility for the rockets. Hamas itself has been holding its fire in line with the truce. ... Source: www.kentucky.com --- 35 days ago
Fatah officials say their Hamas rivals have arrested the group's senior leaders in the Gaza Strip as part of a continuing weeklong crackdown. The Fatah officials say Hamas forces arrested around 15 of Fatah leaders in the roundup early Friday. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they fear for their safety in Hamas-controlled Gaza. The Hamas crackdown against Fatah began a week ago after a mysterious Gaza explosion that killed five Hamas Gunmen and a child. Fatah says more than 200 of its men have been seized, while Hamas has refused to give a number. In response, Fatah forces in the West Bank have seized dozens of Hamas members. Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri says his movement's new Gaza arrests were a response to Fatah's West Bank crackdown. ... Source: www.kentucky.com --- 6 days ago
Egypt opened its sealed border crossing with the Gaza Strip on Saturday, allowing hundreds of people to enter and leave the coastal territory in a goodwill gesture before the holy Muslim month of Ramadan begins, officials said. Palestinians who live abroad or are seeking medical treatment and Egyptians stuck in Gaza because of the sealed border gathered at dawn in a nearby sporting center, where Hamas police shipped them to the Rafah crossing in buses. On the Egyptian side of the border, hundreds of Palestinians massed to cross back into Gaza after being shut out for months. "I am going back home," said Umm Usama, an Egyptian woman married to a Palestinian man, who came to Gaza to visit relatives. "Thank you, President Mubarak, for letting us return home before Ramadan," which begins early next week. Rafah was sealed after the militant Muslim Hamas group seized power in Gaza in June 2007, confining 1.5 million Gaza residents to the tiny coastal territory. Egyptian officials have infrequently opened the crossing since, though in January, Hamas Gunmen breached the border, allowing hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and Egyptians to cross back and forth before Egypt clamped it shut again. ... Israel said Sunday it allowed 180 Fatah-aligned Palestinians fleeing from weekend violence in Gaza to enter the country temporarily as a humanitarian gesture. Israel's Foreign Ministry says the group, including 22 injured men, was being pursued by Gunmen from the rival Hamas militant group, which controls Gaza. The factional strife in a Gaza neighborhood claimed nine lives Saturday, officials said. Thirty of the refugees, however, were later sent back to Gaza at the urging of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, a Fatah member, who reportedly said they could cause trouble if they were sent to the occupied West Bank. Some of the Palestinians arriving Saturday afternoon at a point near the security fence in northern Gaza were armed. ... Source: www.moldova.org --- 34 days ago
