by Frank James, updated at 7:00 pm EDT with McCain campaign response. There's a lot of chatter about the video of Sen. John McCain acknowledging in 2006 the necessity of U.S. officials dealing with Hamas. It came when McCain was interviewed between sessions at the Davos economics conference in Switzerland by Jamie Rubin, the former Clinton State Department official who was working in television at the time. Asked if U.S. officials should deal with the Palestinian government, McCain... ... Source: www.chron.com --- 1 day ago

In a Washington Post op-ed, former Clinton State Department official Jamie Rubin says he spoke to Sen. John McCain about Hamas on British television two years ago. Said McCain: "They're the government; sooner or later we are going to have to deal with them." Last month, McCain criticized Sen. Barack Obama for refusing to criticize former President Carter's meeting with Hamas, saying "it is a grave and dangerous mistake for an American leader to meet with a terrorist organization like Hamas." He has since used Obama's position on Hamas in fundraising solicitations. The op-ed subheader: "McCain Was for Talking Before He Was Against It." ... Source: www.bignewsnetwork.com --- 1 day ago

As most of you know by now, Hamas said they wanted Obama as president. Not much he could do about that, and he’s stated before that he wouldn’t be open to talking to them, but there it is nonetheless. Unfortunately, McCain took that opportunity to try and land a cheap shot against the Illinois senator and [...] ... Source: weblogs.newsday.com --- 4 hours ago
This morning, we posted a clip from a 2006 interview in which John McCain said the US would have to "deal with" Hamas after its victory in Palestinian elections. The clip seemed to contradict McCain's current efforts to attack Obama -- who opposes negotiations with Hamas -- over his willingness to negotiate with Iran's leader, and it's driven a lot of news coverage today. The McCain campaign contends the clip is misleading and blames the interviewer -- former State Dept. spokesman James Rubin, a Clinton supporter -- for distorting its meaning. The campaign has now supplied a longer clip, with a follow-up question and answer, which it says changes the meaning. We're not so sure -- he still says the US has to "see the ways we can engage with" a group dedicated to the extinction of Israel, which is a far cry from his appalled denunciations of Obama -- but in the interests of balance, everyone should judge for themselves: ...
