There's been a lot of anxiety these days about the future of our nation: McCain vs. Obama, Jamie Lynn Spears vs. Bristol Palin, 90210 vs. 90210. They are each worthy, debatable battles, but there's one match-up that I've remained silent on for far too long. (I know what you're thinking: Christina Ricci Thin vs. Christina Ricci Curvy, but no! Not that one. But I choose curvy, if you're wondering. Who wouldn't?) Anyway, the epic dual I'm referring to is a battle of the trifecta-brother-bands, Jonas vs. HANSON. Long-haired Girly Dudes vs. Long-haired Girly Dudes. Damn! That didn't work. Um, let's try 2008 vs. 1998, Grammy Nominations vs. Teen Choice Award Nominations, Critically Acclaimed vs. Dating Miley Cyrus. Even though the brothers, regardless of surname, all share an androgynous, hair-sprayed, high-voice cuteness, it's HANSON's music that will make you stop wondering if you're looking at boys or girls, and start wondering why you haven't listened to them before. So by the power vested in me by the Style Section, I now pronounce HANSON so out that they're in-- any sooner and this proclamation might not have been recognized in California. Right on time. Touring off and on for nearly a decade, HANSON started in 1997 with "MMMbop"-- a hit that was stuffed with catchy guitar licks, sweet harmonies and unexpectedly astute lyrics that you can still hum to this day. They were "in" until the sugary market was saturated, and then quietly ... Source: www.nationalreview.com --- 2 days ago

Sounding like a revamped Jackson 5 for the '90s, HANSON came storming out of Tulsa, OK, in 1997 blessed with photogenic looks and a surprisingly infectious sense of melody. The Whitman-HANSON Regional High School is breaking new ground as the state’s possible choice for a model high school design. Superintendent John F. McEwan said the School Building Authority, the agency which oversees school building construction projects and funding, is considering WHRS as the standard for future projects. “I am very proud of (the school). It took us 30 years to get permission from the towns to build a new school. After three years, we couldn’t be happier with it,” McEwan said. The $49.2 million regional high school was completed in 2005 on schedule and under budget. The 232,000-square-foot school — basically four buildings in one — houses 1,250 students in grades 9 through 12 and is projected to meet the district’s needs for 50 years. It is not your ordinary three-story high school, featuring some of the most high-tech educational tools available. There are 11 computer rooms and every classroom has a Smartboard and teacher’s control console and sound system. There is a spacious, two-story library, indoor walking track, 900-seat acoustical Performing Arts Center, a courtyard for dining, a student dining area with skylights, food court, and kiosks, and a large gymnasium that holds 2,000 people at graduation. WHRS also features its own “Main Street” that functions like a town center complete with a school store, banking branch, computer and TV production rooms, and historical plaques commemorating the finest moments of W ... Providing school bus transportation for students isn’t getting cheaper, and regional school officials aren’t taking any chances. The Whitman-HANSON Regional School Committee recently set aside $200,000 from a reserve account in the $48 million fiscal 2009 budget to cover unexpected increases in diesel fuel and heating oil costs, which have doubled over the past year. “We’ve never done that before,” Superintendent John F. McEwan said of the creation of a special fuel account. The move, while unprecedented, notes that diesel fuel has topped out at $5 a gallon. Each school bus holds about 250 gallons of diesel fuel and gets only about 8 miles to the gallon. Those costs add up quickly, McEwan said, and school officials are making logistical adjustments in transportation to help cope with the rising cost of fuel. For example, McEwan said kindergarten pupils will now be allowed to ride on regular school buses to consolidate capacity. Group bus stops will be created to reduce the number of stops to save on fuel costs, he said. “The more bus stops you have, the longer it takes to get kids to school,” McEwan said. Also, bus occupancy will be increased to cut down on the number of runs. All bus routes and stops are being reviewed to ensure strict compliance to district policy, McEwan said. Whitman-HANSON Regional High School students under two miles away walk to school. Elementary school pupils under three-quarters of a mile away and middle scho ... A 14-year-old boy who was severely burned in a fire Wednesday in HANSON was said to be one of a group of teens who were experimenting with gasoline in a local sand pit. The teen was taken by MedFlight helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital late Wednesday afternoon with first- and second-degree burns over 45 percent of his body. He is currently being treated at a Boston hospital. His name and condition were not released. In a statement issued yesterday by the state fire marshal’s office, State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan said, “Because we handle gasoline so frequently to power engines we forget to give it the respect it commands.” According to the Mass Burn Injury System, in 2007 one-third of all victims of gas related burns were youths aged 15-24. Nationally, teens age 10 to 14 years old are the most likely group to get in trouble with gasoline and be treated for gasoline-related burn injuries, according to Shriners Hospital for Children. “Adults should speak to the children in their care about who should be handling gasoline, how and when,” Coan said. “Young teens should not be handling gasoline without adult supervision and they need to understand how easily gasoline vapors can ignite.” HANSON Fire Chief Jerome Thompson said, “This tragic incident underscores how dangerous each and every inappropriate use of fire by juveniles can be. Juvenile fire setting by young teens must be taken very seriously and addressed appropria ... Source: www.wickedlocal.com --- 35 days ago
The Whitman-HANSON Regional School Committee is set to meet Aug. 20 to assemble a special committee for the selection of a new superintendent of schools. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Whitman-HANSON Regional High School. “Hopefully, we will have plenty of time to find the best candidate we possibly can,” said outgoing Superintendent John F. McEwan, who announced that he will retire from his position in August 2009. McEwan said the search committee will be responsible for screening applicants and conducting interviews. He has agreed to help with the transition before his retirement. “I feel like I am committed to making the transition as smooth as possible,” McEwan said. McEwan began his work as superintendent of the district in September 2001. Before that, he was a teacher and administrator at Cardinal Spellman High School, the Silver Lake Regional School District and the Dover-Sherborn Regional School District. His career in education spans 37 years. McEwan said other unfinished business includes finalizing negotiations with school unions and the fiscal 2010 operating budget. ...
