Source: jorgesaysno.blogspot.com --- 2 hours ago As Ian Desmond continues to make his case to be the Nationals starting shortstop, one has to wonder where this would leave free agent to be Cristian Guzman. The Nationals know that Guzman has lost a step defensively and is not going to be a long term asset for the franchise, so it makes sense for the Nationals to give Desmond a look...as long as the Nationals think he's ready. What's clear is that if Guzman wants another hefty payday, then he needs to have the chance to start, not come off the bench: On Sunday morning, Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo told the Washington Post’s Adam Kilgore, “Money has nothing to do with who’s going to play.” But later that day, Rizzo balked when I asked him about the possibility of releasing Cristian Guzman if Ian Desmond won the shortstop job. Guzman is guaranteed $8 million this season. “He’s still a long way from that type of discussion,” Rizzo said. “He’s a .300 hitter. He can still play short. He’s not an old player by any means.” Guzman, who turns 32 on Sunday, is not a .300 hitter — his career batting/on-base/slugging line is .271/.307/.386. He also is coming off arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder. Desmond, 24, batted .280-.318-.561 last September in 89 plate appearances. While that sample is small, he has resumed his standout play this spring. Would the Nationals make Guzman an $8 million backup? Possibly. More likely, they would give Guzman one more chance and return Desmond to ...
Source: www.bleachernation.com --- 3 hours ago Chicago Cubs reliever Angel Guzman has been a magnet for injuries in his ten years in the organization, and his most recent could mark the end of his time with the Cubs, if not his career. Guzman, 28, has a significant tear in his shoulder, which will keep him out for quite a while, and now the only question is: rehab or surgery? The former is less likely to work, but the latter is more risky. So Guzman is going for a second opinion from the guy who apparently knows everything about sports-related surgery. Angel Guzman [left yesterday] for Alabama, where he’s scheduled to meet with noted sports surgeon James Andrews on Monday to discuss his shoulder injury and treatment options. Guzman still is leaning toward having career-threatening surgery but is trying to keep an open mind. ”I just want to see him Monday and talk to him and think about it,” Guzman said. Guzman, the Cubs’ top reliever last season, was sidelined the last two weeks because of related problems with the shoulder. He entered camp coming off minor knee surgery but otherwise seemed healthy until two setbacks with the shoulder and an MRI exam that revealed a significant tear. CHICAGO SUN-TIMES . If Guzman opts for surgery, you’ve got to believe he’ll miss the rest of the season and will be non-tendered by the Cubs. Perhaps he will come back to rehab, but another team may be more willing to pony up on such a risky property. The surgery decision could very well be the mome ...
Source: voices.washingtonpost.com --- 1 day ago On March 4, the Nationals came here for their first game of the spring and absorbed a 15-5 beating at the hands of the Astros and the wind. The Astros launched five home runs, four of them to right-center, where the wind was blowing out. Well, today, the same wind is back for Scott Olsen to deal with. "You've just got to get the ball down," Manager Jim Riggleman said. "If you get the ball in the air, it's going to go out of the ballpark. It doesn't give you a real good read on how that guy's throwing. But it does give you the challenge of seeing if you can get the ball on the ground and seeing if you can live up to that challenge." In his last start, Olsen allowed three runs on seven hits in two innings. His velocity hovered at about 85-88 mph, which is ...

Source: www.wrongfulconvictionlawsuitdefense.com --- 3 days ago In 2005, Maria Guzman filed a civil rights lawsuit against Chicago police officers claiming her home was illegally searches and she was unlawfully detained. Police officers had a valid search warrant. The search warrant was for a single family residence. After being in Guzman's home for twenty minutes, police officers realized that it was not a single family residence as it appeared from outside - so they left. Defendants won summary judgment, but the case was reversed by the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. The Court held that the search was illegal because the officers should have known they were not in a single family home and left earlier. At her damages trial, Guzman claimed she was "emotionally distressed" by these twenty minutes. Guzman claimed police put her unborn baby into distress and caused her to have contractions when she was only thirty weeks pregnant. Guzman asked the the jury for thousands of dollars in "medical expenses" and unspecified damages for "emotional distress." The jury saw right through it all and came back in under two hours with a $1 verdict for the "technical violation." Mary McCahill, Anne Preston, and Tom Platt of the Corporation Counsel's Office represented the police officers. Larry Jackowiak, Louis Meyer, and Adele Nicholas represented Guzman. Another great result!!! ...

Source: voices.washingtonpost.com --- 4 days ago Along with addressing Jesus Flores's trip to Birmingham, Mike Rizzo touched on various topics today: * Rizzo could care less about the Nationals poor spring start. "Spring training is spring training," he said. "We shouldn't even keep score or keep stats, as far as I'm concerned. I'm not concerned whatsoever with our won-loss record or with the performance of our players." * Rizzo enjoyed watching Stephen Strasburg's debut, but he did -- and nothing he will do -- will change the path set out for Strasburg. "Regardless of what he does in spring training and what he does in the future, it's not going to change my plans," Rizzo said. "It was really good to see how happy he was to be on the mound. That's where he's at home and where he's most comfortable, when he's on the mound." * Rizzo said there's "no update" on Adam Dunn's contract ...

Source: www.hotstove.com --- 5 days ago We asked a bunch of Cubs bloggers how they would handle the bullpen situation, now that reliever Angel Guzman has suffered a season-ending injury. Check out their responses below. With reliever Angel Guzman suffering a likely season-ending injury this weekend, do you think the Cubs should look to sign a remaining free agent reliever like Joe Beimel or Ron Mahay to fill the bullpen void? Matt Trueblood , Bleacher Report No, the Cubs shouldn’t chase second-tier options like Beimel or Mahay. If they feel especially desperate to compete in 2010, they need to add a much better reliever than that: San Diego’s Heath Bell could be an option. If they are content with reloading for a year, there’s no sense in giving a mediocre veteran a chance that might otherwise go to a young player in need of experience and development. Either way, signing an also-ran from the free-agent scrap heap represents an undesirable middle road. Tab Bamford , ChicagoNow.com No, the Chicago Cubs shouldn’t wander around free agency looking for an extra arm. If they were truly concerned about their depth in the bullpen (which they should have been in November), and they knew like the rest of us that Guzman hadn’t made an impact in the majors until he as 28 because of a long history of injuries, then they should have addressed the bullpen before arriving in Arizona. What the Cubs need now it to decide soon who is going to fill out their rotation between Samardzija, Gor ...
