Guy Ritchie's critical beating in the press looks ready to come to an end with the release of his new film RocknRolla, staring Gerard Butler, Jeremy Piven and Tom Wilkenson. Buzz about the film seems to be positive. From the trailer above, it looks like a return to his most successful work, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch , keeping the same quick cuts, sharp casting and gritty look that Ritchie built his name on. But news today is that his US distribution is getting cut short as the film has been deemed "too English". President of Warner Bros, Alan Horn explains to the LA Times : I think it's a well-made picture, but while it's funny in spots, it's very English. I don't think it's broadly commercial. It feels like a film that deserves a spirited release, but not a wide one. For now, we're preparing to release the film in October, but I don't see it starting out on 800 screens. The producer of the film, Joel Silver, had a deal in place with Warner to have the film released on 800 screens, and is reportedly now shopping it around. In light of the recent studio troubles that RocknRolla is having, we've got a great new TV spot to share with you. Watching this makes me forget about all of those troubles and focus on the good aspects. Luckily I get to see RocknRolla next week before I had off to the Toronto Film Festival and I couldn't be more excited. What is a RocknRolla? Well Guy Ritchie told our own Bob $tencil that a RocknRolla could be "the kind of Guy that has sex while flying a plane." But if you're looking for the real answer to that question, this TV spot answers it in a thick English accent. Thanks to Empire for launching this. "RocknRolla starts with a Russian mobster establishing a real estate scam to make millions of pounds, which brings the various ne'er-do-wells of the London crime scene out looking for their slice of the cash." ... ... Watch the trailer for RocknRolla right here on Fancast. Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla looks to be a crazy and fun crime story, and is being hailed as a sort of return to form for the director. Everyone at the panel for the film today was lavishing praise on Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels as well as Snatch , while conveniently not mentioning Revolver or Swept Away , both box office busts. The best moment of the panel was when Ritchie was asked point blank if his recent critical troubles led to any pressure to go back to what used to work for him, and he honestly replied with a loud "Yep!" without any elaboration necessary. Yet he did speak a bit more about that later, in less cynical terms, along with his cast. ...
