You probably don’t know—since I haven’t written about it here—that I use Ubuntu as my primary OS at home. At work, however, I exclusively use Windows XP. I often need my work data at home and my home data at work, so I use a hard disk rack mount to securely move my data drive between my home and work PCs. This solution works, but is imperfect. This is only one of several elements of my computing experience with which I’m dissatisfied. I am optimistic things will improve with the recent release of Ubuntu 7.10, Gutsy Gibbon. NTFS Write Support Out of the box, Gutsy Gibbon can read and write to NTFS partitions. Currently my portable data partition is formatted with the FAT 32 file system. This has been a problem for me when dealing with large media files, since FAT 32 has a file size limit of approximately 4 GB . Once I upgrade, I can reformat my data partition using NTFS and read and write to the partition from both my home and work PCs. Hard Disk Encryption Gutsy Gibbon supports full disk encryption. Since I move my data between work and home, securing my data with encryption is high on my list of solutions to implement. I’m currently seaking a solution that will support my one-drive, multiple OS environment. I’ll definitely be giving this one a look. Pese a que siempre he preferido el free software por encima de privativo me decidí a instalar el navegador Opera 9.26 en mi Ubuntu por cuestiones de rendimiento de Firefox, el cual, en páginas con flash como youtube los videos se veían entrecortados y relantizaban la página. Por esta razón me he visto empujado a instalarme Opera como segundo navegador para navegar por paginas con flash con un resultado muy satisfactorio. I recently upgraded my desktop and notebook computers to Ubuntu's Hardy Heron release, and was surprised to find that things that seemed to be fixed in Gutsy Gibbon were broken again in Hardy. Part of my reason for using Ubuntu is the fact that I can use the 64-bit version on both machines without having to pay an extra $200 per box. Since I'm a regular Eclipse user, the first thing I noticed was that Eclipse became really unstable despite having gotten Eclipse into a stable state under Gutsy. Here's what I've tried: I had previously used the Ubuntu's "Add/Remove" menu item to install Eclipse 3.2. This had always been the most stable install of Eclipse, despite the fact that it wasn't a recent release. I could always count on it working. This wasn't the case after the Hardy install. I tried uninstalling and re-installing it without any effect. I had downloaded and installed a copy of both Europa and Ganymede. Unlike the Eclipse 3.2 install, I manually installed these into a subdirectory of my home directory. These releases work briefly but then die unexpectedly. I noticed that while I was working within Gutsy, I had a re-create the workspace in and fiddle with memory parameters to get it to a stable point. I may try this again with Hardy and see what happens. I tried removing the workspace and recreating it. I tried deleting the project and recreating it. I adjusted the memory, permgen and garbage collection All to no avail. What's odd ...

So I’ve been off Windows for several years now — I have a Mac. I am not going to spend time telling you to pitch your PC and buy a Mac, although I do love mine. It just works; there are seldom issues of any sort with my Powerbook. I do have one issue with Apple — cost. The prices of Apple computers are somewhat over the top. At the time I am writing this, the cheapest laptop you can get from Apple is a grand. If you actually want a laptop with a video card, the lowest price point is two thousand bucks. These prices are double to comparable Windows machines. Vista is just bad and Macs are too expensive, but there is a dark horse in this race, Linux. Linux has been quietly improving over the last several years and now looks more like a viable contender for some serious desk to market share. In the last several weeks I have noticed at least two magazines at local bookstores enticing computer users to switch to Linux. Specifically to Ubuntu 7.10 “Gutsy Gibbon.” Ubuntu is a highly polished, not just for hackers, flavor of Linux. It is by far one of the easiest installs out there.
