Most of the attention on Take-Two this year has understandably been on the takeover drama with Electronic Arts and the record breaking launch of "Grand Theft Auto IV."But in looking over its earnings yesterday, it struck me that the success of "Carnival Games" in the past year really has been impressive and, more importantly, overlooked. The original game for the Wii sold over a million units from last August through March, which is pretty good for any new IP, but especially a casual one on a single console. It and the new version for DS, which launched in early July, sold another million through the end of that month. (I should note that Take-Two actually said it "shipped" over two million copies, meaning they haven't all sold through at retail yet.) Given the trouble that most third party publishers have had in creating successful titles for the Wii (save, of course, for "Guitar Hero"), this is a pretty good achievement in a year. Not to mention creating a new casual franchise, which lots of companies with a background in more hard core titles are talking about but haven't accomplished yet. Even the much heralded (and, I'll venture to say even though I haven't played "Carnival Games," much better) "Boom Blox" hasn't sold close to a million units last we heard. Video gaming's new publishing behemoth expects one in every four games sold this Christmas in Australia will be an Activision Blizzard product. Activision Blizzard was established on July 16, but yesterday marked the formal completion of the merger of Activision and Vivendi with their product portfolios brought together under the one roof, including the popular Guitar Hero, Call of Duty, Crash Bandicoot, WarCraft and James Bond franchises. The new company boasts it is "the world's most profitable console and online games publisher", with a market value of over US$23 billion and global annual sales of over US$4 billion. Activision Blizzard is currently holding the Activate Asia Pacific conference in Auckland New Zealand to demonstrate its Christmas line-up to media and retail representatives from the region, and Managing Director Philip Earl made the bold prediction that the company expects a 25 per cent market share this festive season thanks to the likes of Call of Duty World at War, Quantum of Solace and Guitar Hero IV. Next year's offerings from the company should include highly anticipated PC strategy title StarCraft II, the sequel to one of the world's most enduringly popular games. If you’re a serious Rock Band player then the Drum Rocker may be an excellent investment for you. The $300 drum set has high-durability pads that are supposed to play a little quieter and register a little better than the traditional drum set. The Drum Rocker also has a metal-reinforced kick pad to keep you from destroying your drum set while you’re rocking out and overall looks quite a bit studier than the original (as well it should for that $300 price tag). The cymbals on the Drum Rocker work as doubles for colored game pads (you get to choose which one) which can make for better game play. The Drum Rocker will be available around the time Rock Band 2 is released and is expected to be compatible with both the original Rock Band and Rock Band 2.
