The magnificent times of medieval life — dramatic jousting, royal weddings and larger-than-life characters parading in the rich plumage of Renaissance garb — will be celebrated at the 10th annual Connecticut Renaissance Faire, starting this Saturday and continuing every weekend until Oct. 19 at the Hebron Lions Fairground. The faire, the second largest in New England, will have plenty of entertainment for families who are fascinated with the time when kings, knights, blacksmiths and everyday folk mingled in a stew of exuberant victories, lavish celebrations and great tests of will and survival. The faire began in 1999 behind King’s Inn in Putnam, and also had stints at the campgrounds at the Woodstock Fair and the Brooklyn fairgrounds. It found its home in 2006 at the Hebron Lions Club. “We’ve grown exponentially since our humble beginnings,” said Brian Harvard, the general manager and one of the faire’s founders. The faire debuted with one and a half stages; this year, it will be on more than 20 acres with nine stages. There will be characters — from King Arthur to the bloodthirsty Vikings — to greet visitors amidst the fairgrounds, as well as blacksmith demonstrations, an encampment of knights going about their business and horseback jousting. With Doctor Who paring back production for episodes broadcast in 2009, Saturday nights are up for grabs again in the family adventure drama stakes on BBC1. Robin Hood will be returning in 2009 for third series (with a fourth already strongly hinted at despite the departure of Jonas Armstrong), but for now, it’s down to the BBC Wales/Shine series Merlin to put audiences under its spell between now and Christmas. The series is a prequel to the legend we’ve seen many times before on film and TV and in books, with young Merlin arriving at a Camelot under the rule of King Uther Pendragon (a gruff Anthony Head). Magic has been outlawed by Uther, the use of which is punishable by death, which is a problem for Merlin as he’s got the power running through him like a river that’s burst its banks. As the first episode unfolds, Merlin encounters a young and arrogant Prince Arthur, and is told of his destiny to guide the future king to greatness from the great dragon imprisoned deep beneath the castle… We’re also introduced to Guinevere, and Uther’s sister Morgana, along with a Richard Wilson as Merlin’s crotchety mentor Gaius. And so the scene is set for 13 weeks of adventure, sword fights, sorcery and, no doubt, a little bit of snogging along the way. But is it any good? ... Keira Knightley has played some big literary characters - Lara Antipova in Dr Zhivago , Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice , Guinevere in King Arthur . She was recently Oscar nominated for her role as Cecilia Tallis in the film version of Ian McEwan's Atonement . This week, Newsnight Review considers her latest role, that of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, in The Duchess , a film built around the biography by Amanda Foreman. Whereas Foreman's book covered all aspects of Georgiana's life - from her politics and activism to her psychological makeup - the film sticks doggedly to her relationships and unconventional marriage. Fans of the book could well be disappointed, but do we expect any more of literary adaptations? And it's not only in the cinema. We're also looking at Tess on Review this week - the BBC's adaptation of Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy - which kicks off another season of page-to-screen transfers across all genres including Dickens's Little Dorrit , CJ Sansom's Matthew Shardlake series, Affinity by Sarah Waters and Jilly Cooper's Octavia .
